

She passed away peacefully in her home where she has lived for 63 years.
Dorothy was born November 7, 1938, in Rock Island, Illinois to Gunner and Maude (Brotherton) Nelson. She was united in marriage to the one and only love of her life, Robert Potter, on September 26, 1958, in DeWitt, Iowa. Dorothy was a devoted wife and stay-at-home mother for her four children. She was always there for their every need. Later in her life, she worked for several years as the secretary of her church.
Dorothy’s life was dedicated to Christ. She lived out her faith by serving the Lord through various ministries in the Church and also lived in service of her family and friends. She enjoyed baking, gardening, watching game shows, and talking on the phone for hours with her daughters. She was always a loving, caring, and very protective woman. Dorothy never missed a birthday and her loved ones cherished the cards they received from her every year.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 66 years, Robert Potter; children, Mark (Christy) Potter of Maricopa, AZ, Cindy (Darrell) Garlough of Davenport, IA, Julie (Jerry) Christy of Reynolds, IL, and Chris (Carly) Potter of Muscatine, IA; siblings, Mary Nelson of Dubuque, IA, Ed (Mary Ellen) Nelson of New York City, NY, and Lori (Kenny) Kenniker of Fort Myers, FL; grandchildren, Steve (Ashley) Kilker, David (Cori) Kilker, James (Leah) Christy, Jeri Lynn (Dasan) Hawk, Amy (Tralix) Strickland, Melissa Potter, and Jessica (Greg) Marty; and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gunner and Maude Nelson; grandson, Joseph Potter; brothers, Gunner Nelson Jr., Richard Nelson, Carl Nelson, Eric Nelson, and Mike Nelson; and sisters, Donna Studer, Karen Suffel, and Sheryl Hagge.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at the Davenport First Church of the Nazarene, 1010 N. Clark St., Davenport. IA. Pastor Kobe Lovan will preside. A visitation will precede the service starting at 9:00 a.m.
