Born on February 20, 1944, Doug's journey began in Des Moines, IA. He later graduated from Seymour High School as part of the class of '61, leaving an indelible mark as the Running Back and Captain of the Seymour football team.
In 1962, Doug married the love of his life, Sandra Kay (Shriver) Butler, embarking on a journey that spanned over 61 years of marriage in Bettendorf. They were blessed with three daughters: Lori (Dennis) Born, Deb (Scott) Wagner, and Nicole (Howard) Stanton. Doug took pride in providing for his family and was so very proud of his girls. His grandchildren: Tyler (Dana) Born, Kelsey (Phil) Bohle, Drew Douglas (Jasmine) Wagner, Emily (Jake) Terry, Annika Knudsen, Macey Knudsen, Evelyn Knudsen, Sarah Stanton, and great-grandchild Troy, were a constant source of joy for him. He loved taking them to Whitey's for ice cream, attending their sporting events and dance recitals, playing cards, doing puzzles, and going golfing with them.
Doug's dedication extended beyond the home front. He attended St. Ambrose University while dedicating an impressive 30 years of service to Alcoa before retiring. He took great pride in providing for his family, a value that defined his character. His skilled woodworking talent was another expression of his love for his family, often leaving hidden personal notes on the beautiful pieces he created.
An avid sports enthusiast, Doug played men's softball in addition to his love for golf, bowling, and hunting. He was known for his numerous "perfect" 300 bowling games. Doug & Kay were honored as "Bettendorf HS Fans of the Year", gifted a signed ball and even rode in the homecoming parade, a cherished memory for both of them. His passion for golf was evident through his dedication to Sunrise Golf Course where he spent much of his time. In honor of this commitment, the family welcomes memorial contributions toward the placement of a commemorative bench at the course. Contributions may be written to Lori Born and sent to Weerts Funeral Home.
As Doug often quoted, "Perfect is close enough!"—a sentiment that encapsulates his approach to life and his legacy of love and laughter.
His favorite tunes were by Elvis Presley and most old-school classic country, especially Johnny Cash. The last song he listened to, sung and tapped his fingers to (just before passing) was "All Shook Up," surrounded by his family.
Doug's humor, ornery grin, twinkle in his eye, and soft heart will be missed by many. His legacy lives on through his wife, daughters, eight grandchildren, great-grandson, and sister, Ann (Wendall) Agan.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Edith (Snider) Reed, and brother, James David "Dave" LaDouceur.
The visitation is scheduled for Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 10:00 am at Weerts Funeral Home in Davenport, IA, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am. In keeping with Doug’s wishes to keep it simple, a comforting gathering for light fare will be offered immediately following the service. Doug will be laid to rest at Davenport Memorial Park at 1:30pm.
Online condolences and fond memories may be expressed at www.weertsfh.com. May Doug rest in eternal peace, his spirit forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
