Frederick Christian Gerber passed away at home in Davenport, Iowa on Monday, January 19, 2026, at the age of 71. Cremation has taken place, and a private graveside ceremony will be held Sunday, March 1 at Inland Cemetery in Bennett, Iowa. The family invites neighbors and friends to join them in a Celebration of Life luncheon at Davenport Elks Lodge on Sunday, March 1 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Fred was born on June 10, 1954, to Emil Emanuel and Genevieve Anna (Cox) Gerber in Fairbury, Illinois. His name honors both Genevieve and Emil’s fathers. He graduated from Fairbury-Cropsey High School. He holds an associate degree in microcircuitry from Parkland Junior College, Champaign, Illinois, and a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering from St. Ambrose University, Davenport, Iowa. His first job from junior college was at Litton (now Eaton Mission Systems) in the Davenport testing lab for onboard aeronautical instruments. He retired from Kraft Heinz Oscar Mayer, Davenport, as a maintenance coordinator. Known for his sharp wit, Fred’s dry and sarcastic sense of humor was an acquired taste. He loved chess, reading and daily crossword puzzles. He was a lifelong hunter of rabbit and running beagles. He made a mean pot of ham and potatoes, and an excellent meatloaf.
He is survived by his partner of 30 years Angela J. Gallagher; and siblings Elton (Elaine) Gerber of Gardner, IL, Ann Hoke of Pontiac, IL, Montie (Joan) Gerber of Forrest, IL, James (Judy) Gerber of Forrest, IL, and John (Rose) Gerber of Fairbury, IL; and many nieces and nephews in whom he took great pride.
We thank the healthcare providers who supported Fred in managing his health over recent years. A special thank you to Dr. Mouhamed W. Al Sheikha and the staff of Davita Ea Motto Dialysis, Davenport, for exceptional care.
In lieu of flowers, Fred’s family asks that memorial donations be made to The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) in his name.
