

He was born in Davenport, Iowa, to Gladys and Thomas Nickolas on July 3, 1933. A graduate of Davenport Central High School in 1951, George went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in business from Augustana College and later his Master’s in Managerial Studies and Economics from the Florida Institute of Technology. He was a proud US Navy veteran having served during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953.
George worked as a Chief Contracting Officer at the Rock Island Arsenal and served as Davenport’s second Ward Alderman from 1993 to 2003.
On December 7, 1963, he married his beloved wife, Vera Irene Cummings, at St. Mark’s Church in Davenport. He was tended to by his wife, Vera, and granddaughter, Alexandra, in his final days.
He is survived by his wife, Vera; his son, Michael (Nary); granddaughter, Alexandra; grandson, Tony; four great-grandchildren; sister, Esther (Robert) Bachus, Wheatland; nieces; nephews; and his loyal tabby cat, Taz, who comforted him in his time of need.
George was preceded in death by his daughter, Michele; his grandson, Tom; and his parents, Gladys and Thomas.
A devout Lutheran and long-time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, George was also a lifelong member of the Disabled American Veterans Association. Alongside Vera, he was an advocate for animal rights and welfare.
