

George Spies, Jr., 83, of Maysville, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the Davenport Lutheran Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, April 22, 2013 in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from 4-7PM Sunday, April 21, 2013 at the mortuary. Burial will be at the Maysville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Maysville Fire Station or to the Make A Wish Foundation. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rungemortuary.com.
George was born on June 9, 1929 in the Littig House in Scott County, the son of George and Edna (Ronnfeldt) Spies. He married Darlene Rohwer on September 17, 1949 in Davenport.
Mr. Spies was employed for 32 years at Oscar Mayer Foods Corporation. He then worked ten years for the North Scott School System and later worked for Mycogen Seeds and the Davenport Municipal Airport Weather Station.
George coached baseball in the West Scott baseball league in Eldridge, IA. He had a strong love for his family and was so proud of each and every one of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Nothing made him happier than being surrounded by his family. He was an avid Cubs fan.
Survivors include wife, Darlene Spies; daughter, Cathy Smeltzer, Donahue; sons, Mickey (Jody), New Liberty; Tommy (Denise), Buffalo; Barry (Denise), Oconomoc, WI; Harry (Melinda), Maysville; Randy (Janelle), Muscatine and Scotty (Jody), Donahue; sixteen grandchildren; thirteen great grand children; sister-in-law, Betty Spies, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Wilbert, Marlin, Harry, Elmer and Allyn.
