Howard “Pete” Edinger, Jr., 86, of Davenport, passed away Friday, October 26, 2018 at Unity Point Terrence Park, Bettendorf. The family is honoring his request for cremation with no services, they wish to celebrate his life privately. Memorials in Pete’s name may be made to the Davenport YMCA.
Pete was born in 1932 to Howard and Emma Edinger in Michigan City, Indiana. He graduated in 1948 from Harrisburg High School, in Harrisburg, Illinois. He went on to play football at St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri. He went on to receive his BS degree from Eastern Illinois State University in Charleston, Illinois, where he was a member of TAU KAPPA EPSIHON Fraternity. In 1953, he was united in marriage to Marilyn “Lyn” Jeane Moyer.
Pete served as a SGT. In the United States Army during the Korean War as a physical training instructor at Camp Grorden in Georgia. In 1954, he started coaching high school football at Ubly, Michigan and in 1956 at Gilman High School in Gilman, Illinois; he was also the high school principal in 1959. In 1958 he earned his Master’s Degree at Eastern Illinois State University. Shortly after, he left teaching, and moved to Davenport, Iowa as district manager for State Farm Insurance Company from 1961-1967. He returned to education, coaching track at Bettendorf High School. He entered the Davenport School system in 1967, teaching physical education at Frank L Smart Jr. High School, coaching 9th grade football, wresting, track, and running the intramural program. In 1982 he transferred to Williams Jr. High School and taught the same programs. His teams won 8 city championships. He instilled in his players that effort and team work they displayed on the field would be transferred to their daily lives off of the field. He enjoyed his family and was an avid walleye fisherman. He always took the time to teach young men.
Those left to honor Pete’s memory are his wife: Lyn; children Shay (Ronald) Murphy, Scott (fiancé Isabel Carballo) and Howard III; grandchildren: Katie Lynn, Kelsey Nichole, and Ryan Scott Edinger; great-granddaughters: Alaina and Eliana; sisters Sally Christensen, Noralie (Marty) Parsms; sisters in law Sandra Edinger and Jan Edlinger; and twelve nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Jim and Bing.
