I had Mr. Dunsworth as a gym teacher at Madispn when he just got out out college.   You could not of asked for a better teacher for young children.  He was an extraordinary gentleman.  He will be missed dearly.  Rest in peace Mr. D

I had to retrospectively stare into space a while when receiving the news of Coach Dunsworth’s passing. I’ve told many friends of the blessing I received being trained/mentored by “epic” coaches during my  time at Davenport Central High.  Having Jim Fox Sr. in Fall on the gridiron, Don Grensing in the Winter for hoops, and then Ira Dunsworth in Spring at Brady St. (now Ira Dunsworth Stadium) was a gift. 

I remember Coach Dunsworth as competitive, fair, focused, visionary, soft spoken and having a strange sense of humor — and I’m referring to  him teaching science class. On the track and field, winning was the expectation. He always set the bar high and it was our task to reach it. 

Most importantly, Coach Dunsworth’s ability to coalesce an eclectic  group of testosterone-driven guys into a team unafraid to compete against all foes represents a  “secret sauce” that separated him from others. I am forever grateful to be a part of Coach Dunsworth’s “magic” in track (suggesting that I pick up the discus though I didn’t know at the time what it was) and in the class room (suggested that I take Mr. Sweeney’s invite-only Physics class  — one of the best I had at Central).

God bless the Dunsworth Family in losing a true patriarch and teacher. Heaven gains an angel, ready to coach and has a 400-meter workout in his back pocket!  Go Blue Devils!! Jamie Williams ‘78

Mr Dunsworth coached me in Cross Country and was my Science Teacher in the 1980s.  I looked up to him and when he spoke I listened.  I wanted to do right by him and when I fell short he stayed present and steady.  He also listened to my often nonsensical teenage rambles and still stayed present and  steady.  I've always appreciated Mr Dunsworth and knew I was lucky to be coached and taught by him.

Coach Dunsworth was a master motivator.  He always knew how to push everyone on our teams to get the most out of them…. What I appreciated the most is how he knew everyone that ran for him so well - and knew when to push people and when they needed love.  I got the honor to play Coach Dunsworth in a Homecoming Skit when the school was honoring him - 13 years before he retired.  
      I will always remember him looking over his glasses - laughing with us and shouting out times- and the love of interacting with students and everyone he came into contact with!  He made a huge difference in my life and with everyone he came into contact with!

Oh Dolly, Bob and I are so sorry for your loss.  Ira was such a wonderful man, I had the pleasure of being a student of his many moons ago 😂.  He will be greatly missed, our luncheons will never be the same.  He had such a great sense of humor, always had us all in stitches.  You both are two of the kindest people I’ve ever known ❤️    Sending prayers and hugs to you and your family.  

Coach D impacted so many students both in the classroom and through athletics. For me it was personal, I had the pleasure of having him coach me during all of my high school cross country seasons at Central.
My favorite memory is when he and Dolly took me to state my Senior year. I qualified alone and at the starting line I remember specifically asking for last minute advice. He looked at me all serious and stated  “run really fast!”  Followed by that customary pat in the back. 


I was a dedicated member of the '72-74 Central track teams, but my favorite memories of Coach "D" are of his school hallway wit and calm presence.  So thrilled to have his example in my life, and I continue to be inspired by his individual care for so many thousands of us.  What a hero!

We are so sorry to hear about Ira. We will keep you guys in our prayers. My son and daughter ran track for North High School and both of them  spoke about how Coach Dunsworth  gave them pointers on running even though they were on an opposing team. What a great man!

What a treasure in Blue Devil history. Our hearts go out to you Dolly , Konnie, and the boys. Anyone who knew Ira was better for it. His students and all his athletes were blessed to have him as teacher and coach.

Dolly, Konnie and family, thank you for sharing your husband, father and grandfather with me . I am blessed beyond words to have been a part of this wonderful man’s life. His smile…infectious, his sense of humor…spectacular, and his life…humbly legendary. I first met Ira Dunsworth in Elementary school he was my Gym teacher! Then met again when I was in high school ,  I thought he was such a cool person.  When I got married I found out we would be related! What a pleasure it was having you and Dolly  as friends and family!

I was fortunate to meet Ira early on in my coaching career at Pleasant Valley High School. He is a legend within the track and field community. I admired him as I entered the profession and benefitted from his knowledge and support.  My favorite memories of Ira come from the Drake Relays and state championships where he officiated so many times. When one of our runners won a state championship he would give them the spent shell from his starter’s pistol as a souvenir.  He was always the first to congratulate me and our team after a strong effort. I have been fortunate to work with numerous coaches over the years that were coached by Ira. They still hold him in the highest regard. Many of them calling Coach Dunsworth a father to them.  Thank you Coach Dunsworth and Dolly for all you have done for athletes and coaches. I am grateful! Ira was a treasured teacher/coach and official. I feel privileged to have worked with for many years at the Drake Relays.I will never forget his dedication to track and field, not only At Central Davenport HS, but to HS athletes all over the state of Iowa. All of us enjoyed the track meets we worked with Ira.  He was a fair and honest man with a great sense of humor.  He always had a twinkle in his eye. He was always well respected.  
I have seen him work with coaches in a heated situation and everyone always came out friends and an understanding of why Ira had to rule as he did.  He had a gift of working with people.  We will mikss hiom.

All three of our children were blessed to be students of Ira. The knowledge, care and love he imparted will forever be in their lives. We are so sad for the family and for our world that he has left us.  
What a giant in his field and a kind and generous man he was.

Mr. Dunsworth was a extraordinarily good man.  I was lucky to first meet him when he first started his teaching carer at Madison School in Davenport.  As I never was lucky to have him after that I always remembered him.  I know that at our 1964 class reunion breakfasts everybody enjoyed his and his wife's companionship.   I can surely guarantee  that everyone who had a chance to meet him will miss him.  Rest in peace Mr. D you were an inspiration to all who meant you. 

To know him, was to love him for his ever present smile and kindness he extended to everyone he met.  He influenced literally thousands of young people through his teaching and coaching at CHS.  
Our sincere condolences to Dolly and the entire family.  He will be missed by so many.  Rest in peace Coach Dunsworth.  

Mrs. Dunsworth, Konnie and family, our prayers are with you during this time of loss.  Mr. D was and awesome teacher, coach, and all around great guy! I can still picture his smile, he always wore it, no matter what! I am sure I speak for all the Swans, but I know I am a better person for having known, been taught, and experienced some life with him! May God keep you in His arms and guide your sorrow to joy knowing he is in the arms of Jesus!

Rest In Peace Ira. You’ve always been Tootie to me. My brother-in-law for 25 yrs. I’ll always think of you fondly for your and Dolly’s kindnesses over the years and for mentoring my son Dick Jr. and even his son Kole. My deepest sympathy to the family. 

Pure and simple…… Ira was one of the All-Time greatest teachers, coaches, and human beings to walk the halls of Davenport Central High School……period!!!
