Joan was a respected matriarch, a loving mother, and a savvy businesswoman with a lifelong dedication to her community and family.
Joan was the proud owner and operator of Struve Builders, a real estate and rental property business in the Quad City area, which she started in 1953. Before her entrepreneurial ventures, she worked as a bookkeeper for the Scott County Auditor and Scott County Treasurer’s office. Joan’s commitment to her community was evident in her extensive volunteer work, including over 16 years with the Mercy and Genesis West Auxiliary, where she also served as chairman for the Genesis East and West Bereavement Program. She was a familiar face participating as a model at various style show gala events for Genesis Health Systems and contributed her time to the Assumption High School Rising Knights and Pleasant Valley School System Band Boosters. Her civic engagement extended to serving as a district representative for Our Lady of Lourdes and chairperson of the Quad Cities DeLorean Motor Association Rally, as well as helping with organizing events for the City of Riverdale, IA.
Joan’s personal interests were as diverse as her professional and volunteer engagements. She loved her Chihuahuas, was an avid gardener, enjoyed Lebanese cooking, dancing, and playing the organ. Joan also had a passion for making floral arrangements and was an enthusiastic car lover.
A woman of strong faith, Joan will be remembered at a private memorial mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. She is survived by her children, Jeffrey, Cynthia, and Susan; grandchildren, Quienevere, Mark, Montanna, Brandon, Anthony, and James; and great-grandchildren, Luna and Violet. Joan was preceded in death by her 14 year old son, Mark.
Joan’s legacy of love, faith, and community service will be cherished and remembered by all who knew her. Contributions in Joan’s memory can be made to the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
