

John Edward McMahon, 89, of Davenport passed away Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Rock Island Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon, Thursday, January 28, 2016 in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from 10 am to service time, Thursday, at the mortuary. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rungemortuary.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
John was born September 10, 1926 to Thomas and Lydia (Wilcox) McMahon. He joined the US Navy in 1944 and was honorably discharged as “Seaman First Class” in 1946. He married Catherine L. Eppard on February 14, 1947 and enjoyed her company for 62 years.
John’s most prominent jobs were as a meat cutter for Johnnies’s Market in Davenport and as a salesperson for RCA, from which he retired.
John and Catherine enjoyed traveling, fishing and hunting. In his later years, John became an avid picture painter and model train enthusiast. He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church.
Survivors include an older brother, Thomas McMahon, nephew and nieces: Tom (Brenda) Hart, John (Diana) Hart, Lydia (Richard) McCrady, Frances Panther, Thomas (Judy) McMahon, Margaret Sersig; and numerous great and great, great nieces and nephews and his faithful dog, Gizmo. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sisters Frances (Alvin) Sersig and Margaret (John) Hart; niece Sharon Terry and nephews Alvin (“Bud”) Sersig and Jerry McMahon.
