DAVENPORT — Jon W. Hoglund, of Davenport, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly early Monday morning, Jan. 25, 2016, in Tarpon Springs, Fla. Celebration of Life services are planned noon Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Visitation begins one hour earlier.
Jon was born in Cedar Rapids in 1942 to Don and Frances Stewart Hoglund. The family moved to Minnesota in 1950, and he graduated from Orono High School, Long Lake, Minn., in 1960. The family returned to Cedar Rapids to care for Frances’ mother after Jon’s graduation. He attended Coe College and participated in the Air Force ROTC program.
A blind date in 1961 led to Jon marrying Mary Ann Schultz on Nov. 28, 1964. Jon worked at National Tea Grocery stores as a co-manager. He was hired by Calkins & Co. in 1969 and continued in the food brokerage business until his retirement from Advantage Sales and Marketing in 2007.
Over the years, Jon was the committee chairperson for Cub Scout Pack 683, loved his sons’ soccer games, enjoyed fixing things around the house, taking care of the swimming pool, golfing with friends, Monday night mixed league volleyball, playing trivia with friends, his Friday morning meeting with the guys to solve the world’s issues and his season tickets to Circa '21. He was a dedicated, loving family man who loved and cared for his friends and family.
Jon had been to only four states when he and Mary Ann met. Making sure his sons were able to experience travel was a priority to him, so there were family vacations to California, Florida, New England and all spots in between. He and Mary Ann loved road trips (Route 66, Al-Can highway in Alaska and Route 30 to California). He particularly enjoyed cruises, including the month-long cruise to Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Britain, Ireland, Wales and Scotland to celebrate their 50th anniversary.
Memberships included Manufacturers Representative Association, Marion Masonic Lodge 6, Mohassan Grotto and the NRA.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann; son, Matthew, Denver; son, Mark, and his wife, Julie, Coralville, Iowa; brother-in-law and family, Fred and Jan Schultz; niece, Shannon; nephew, Brian (Michelle), and their children, Trevor and Taylor, all of Florida; granddaughter of the heart, Genevieve Downs; cousins, Cathy Fisher, Iowa, John Stewart, Robert Stewart, both of Texas, J.T. Stewart, Georgia, Tom Stewart, Mississippi, and Susan Hicks, Nevada. His parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles all preceded him.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Jon’s name to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association. Jon lived a full life but will be missed by so many!
