

Msgt. LeRoy H. Carlson, 89, of Bettendorf, Iowa passed away December 23, 2024 at his home. Services will be held January 3, 2025, 12:00pm at Weerts Funeral Home; visitation will be before the service starting at 10:00am. Burial with Military Honors will be held at Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery following the service. Memorials may be made to Camp Courageous or Shriners Children’s Hospital.
LeRoy was born September 6, 1935 at Alpha, Illinois, to Oscar Carlson and Hedda V. Fredholm Carlson. He married Patricia Watson in 1958; they divorced in 1974 and he married Shirley Van Landingham in 1979 in Davenport, IA; she preceded him in death.
LeRoy was raised on the family farm and graduated from Joy High School. He served 20 plus years in the US Army and retired as a Master Sargent. He served in Vietnam in 1967 and again in 1969-1970 and in Germany and Turkey. LeRoy worked at Zayre Dept. Store, the Rock Island Arsenal, Ace Hardware and retired as Superintendent of Mercer County Veterans Assistance Commission. He belonged to Viola and New Boston Masonic Lodges, and served as Worshipful Master of Viola in 1987, 1990, and 2022, the Valley of Moline Scottish Rite, KAABA Shrive and Legion of Honor in Davenport, IA. He also belonged to Viola VFW Post 2623, Irvin Lee Terry American Legion Post 229 of Viola and Vorture 237 Rock Island/Mercer County 40 and 8; he was a past Commander of these organizations.
He is survived by his daughter Peggy Summers, son, Wayne (Kelly) Carlson and daughter Natalie Carlson, seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by wife Shirley, parents, brother Ralph, Brother Floyd, great-granddaughter, Mercedes Summers, and great-grandson Kevin Weatherington.
