Marcia Curtis, 88, died peacefully at home on August 9, 2025, after an extended illness. Visitation will be held Sunday, August 17, 4-7 pm, and the funeral service will be held Monday, August 18, 10 am, at Runge Mortuary in Davenport.
Marcia Jeanne Plambeck was born on April 24, 1937, in Davenport, Iowa, to Emil Plambeck and Jeannette (Garstang) Plambeck. She lived in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and North Hollywood, California, but primarily grew up in Davenport. She graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1955. Around that time, she met a young farmer, David Curtis, at the Trio Roller Rink and they married on Valentine's Day 1957. She worked as a legal secretary before her marriage, saving her money to help buy livestock for their farm near Big Rock, Iowa. Eventually, they moved closer to the Curtis farm near McCausland, Iowa.
Together they created a warm and loving family home. Marcia prepared wonderful meals to share whenever there was an opportunity as she was an excellent cook. Evenings often meant a truck ride out through the pastures to check the cows and enjoy the views. While caring for her young family, she also helped with the farm, prepared meals for crews, and was an attentive recordkeeper.
She provided a foundation of support for all of her children's activities, by sewing their elaborate dance and baton costumes, guiding them through hundreds of 4-H projects, from cooking, sewing, photography, woodworking, and livestock care - nurturing their interests, along with her own, with an encouraging (yet practical) attitude. She loved watching her grandchildren in all their various activities. From dance programs, theatrical plays, horse shows, concerts, and sports teams, she was always there with an encouraging smile.
In her younger years, Marcia could be found caring for the farm acreage, mowing, gardening, cleaning and decorating the beautiful home they designed and built. Marcia and David enjoyed volleyball, square dancing, card clubs, snowmobiling, and time spent with the Quad City Antique Ford Club showing their classic cars. She spent countless hours researching family genealogy through bounds of publications (before there was the internet). Travel was always part of Marcia's life and she enjoyed planning family trips through the years, researching and exploring all the possibilities.
Marcia's faith helped to guide her and the family through the difficult times, losing a young daughter and grandson along the way. She was an active member of the McCausland United Methodist Church, serving on various boards and roles through the years. She was grateful, generous, and shared her faith with others. She served the community through various volunteer opportunities including 4-H leader, McCausland Labor Day, and Bix events. She lived by the Golden Rule that her father taught her and wanted others to do the same.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, David; daughters, Sherrie (Larry) Ilg, Diane (Brent) Pumphrey, Joni (Donald) Nelson; grandchildren Melissa (Ollie) East, Brianne Johnson (Michael Fleming), Bryan (Stephanie) Ilg, Kayla (Tad) Christenson, JD (Jessica) Pumphrey, Taylor (Brooke) Nelson, Jennifer (Vinny) Bialk, and Carter Nelson; 13 great-grandchildren, Ava, Ben, Everett, Felix, Ellasyn, Wesley, Isaac, Deacon, Chloe, Gavin, Madelyn, Payton, and Riley; sister-in-laws Margaret Claeys, Marge Curtis-Day, Holly Curtis; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Marilyn Jeanne Curtis, her grandson, Justin Curtis Ilg, and sister-in-law and brother-in-laws, Ruth Starr, Helen (Bob) Miller, Ray (Tulane) Curtis, Ralph Curtis, Ben (Patricia) Curtis, Robert (Dorothy) Curtis, and Martin Curtis.
Memorials may be made to the McCausland Fire Department or the McCausland United Methodist Church.
