Nan was born on June 23, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, to Robert and Phebe Swinehart. Following high school, Nan earned her bachelor's degree in teaching from the University of Michigan. She met Philip Allen while at college, and they were married on August 20, 1955; he passed away in 2016. Nan and Phil moved to Cambria, California, after his retirement in 1985. While in California, she was an active member of the Cambria Community Presbyterian Church, where she lead many bible studies. Her passion for teaching the Bible and understanding the biblical roots of her Christian faith motivated her to take extension classes at Fuller Theological Seminary. Nan enjoyed doing watercolors and spending time out in the garden. She also enjoyed traveling, but most of all, Nan had a special wit and loved to spend time with her family.
Those left to honor her memory are her children Ed (Maria), Phil Jr., and Bob (Joni); grandchildren Matt, Rachel, Lydia, Bekah (Mateo), Drew (Ellie), Shannon, and Ben; great-grandchildren Sam and Oliver; and little sister Judy Davis.
She was preceded in death by her husband Phil and daughter-in-law Jane.
