Richard Adolph Jirus

Richard Adolph Jirus, 91, passed away on March 22, 2026 at Ridgecrest Village. Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial visitation will be held at Edwards United Church of Christ, 3420 Jersey Ridge Rd, Davenport, IA 52807, on March 27, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am at the church. Richard will be laid to rest at Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Edwards United Church of Christ.

Richard was born August 25, 1934, in Moline, Illinois, to Hermina (Zelba) and Adolph Jirus. A cheerful presence to those who knew him, Richard filled his days with motion, purpose, and the steady kindness of a life well shared.

Richard attended the University of Illinois, where he served as captain of the gymnastics and volleyball teams, and earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering. After graduation, Richard began his career with Alcoa. Shortly thereafter, he was called to serve in the United States Air Force. Following his service, he returned to Alcoa as an engineer, where he worked until retirement.

Not soon after graduating from the University of Illinois, Richard married Martha Hahn on June 23, 1957. Together they built a life rooted in family, friendship, and the simple joy of being side by side.

Richard found great joy in riding his bicycle to work everyday and enjoyed plenty of rides in his spare time as well. He rode RAGBRAI nearly every year beginning with RAGBRAI number 4—one of the many pastimes he enjoyed with family and friends—and he was also skilled at fixing bicycles. He travelled countless times with family and friends, RV in tow, collecting miles and memories along the way. Richard also obtained his pilot license so he could travel to referee volleyball games and judge gymnastics.

Richard was a member of Edwards United Church of Christ, where he met many cherished friends and found a community that mattered deeply to him.

Those left to cherish Richard's life include his wife, Martha Jirus; daughters, Marjorie Jirus and Laura Jirus; grandchildren, Caitlin Jirus, Austin Jirus, and Darren Jirus; and many beloved friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Julia Claussen.
