Robert was born December 4, 1928, in Davenport; he was the son of Leroy “Lefty” and Helen (Hamer) Miller. He married the love of his life, Dorae J. Dipple, on May 28, 1955, after his service in the U.S. Air Force. She passed away June 23, 2019.
Prior to his retirement, he worked as a food broker with Patrick Hibbler Company. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Davenport.
Bob enjoyed hunting, target shooting, fishing, and bowling with his many friends during his younger years. He also liked old western movies and big band music. He was an Iowa Hawkeye fan along with being an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan which led to many trips with the family over the years to baseball games in St. Louis. Family vacations were always special to Dorae and Bob. Every summer they would pack up all five kids in their station wagon and head cross-country somewhere. They also loved traveling to see their daughter, Tracy, in Seattle and made several trips to Houston to see their grandkids. One memorable trip to Houston is when Bob wanted to help out around the house, but there wasn’t much for him to do. They decided to just let him ride around in the yard on the John Deere tractor mower. Well Grandpa ended up running over all the newly planted seedling trees.
During the spring and summer he always grew tomatoes in his garden and really enjoyed eating them. He loved Dorae’s fabulous home cooking, especially her mashed potatoes and gravy which it seemed he requested every night. Bob loved to tinker with things and he would always try to fix something no matter how old it was rather than buy a new one. One more funny memory we have is of how Grandpa Bob was such a ruthless Euchre player who never even let his grandkids win no matter how young they were. He even told Samantha one time to never trust the scorekeeper along with giving her his famous nudge and a wink.
Those left to honor his memory include his children, Marty Miller of Bettendorf, IA, Daniel (Donna) Miller of Cypress, TX, Lisa Miller, Davenport, IA and Tracy Miller, Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Scott Miller, London, England, Samantha (Jonathan) Wilson, Shannon Miller both of Cypress, TX; great-granddaughters Karen Sha Miller and Lucy Maria Miller, both of Raeford, NC; niece and nephews, Mark (Sandy) Butnuh, South Pasadena, CA, Cathy Cooley, Davenport, IA, and Steve Cooley, Davenport, IA; great-nephews, John Cooley, Minneapolis, MN, and Patrick Cooley of Davenport, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife, daughter, Karen Sue Miller and a sister, Beverly Butnuh.
