Roxanne, “Rocky” or “Roxy”, was born May 17th, 1954 in Davenport to Clara Laurent And Keith Heston. She grew to be a loving daughter, wife, mother and friend who always took care of the people she loved most, the best she knew how.
“Rocky” worked a majority of her life caring for animals. She followed her passion and began a long running career at the Humane Society of Scott County, saving and caring for any and every type of animal. The love she had for every living creature was big enough for them all. If you were ever privileged to be in her home, it was proof!
Growing up, her kids were lucky to come home from school to new and unusual animals weekly. She taught her children how to care for babies without mothers or injured animals and how to properly release them back into the wild. Nothing brought her more joy than making an impact in the animal world.
Roxanne’s favorite hobbies were painting, singing, dancing, baking, cooking, crafting, fishing and riding her horses. Christmas time, her home was filled with the smell of cookies and her belting out her favorite tunes while dancing around the kitchen. Her smile and laughter were contagious.
Roxanne was married to Jeff Hughes Sr.. They had 5 kids whom she loved dearly. Sabrina, Bill, Jeff Jr., Samantha and Clara. After having a health scare, she chose to be a stay at home Mom to be closer to her children.
Rocky was a pillar of strength. Throughout her own life, she showed her children how to be mentally and physically tough. That anyone could do anything they put their mind to, with a little grit and elbow grease. She was and always will be an inspiration to all who knew her.
