

Thomas Henry Purdy, 81, of Davenport, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, April 30, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, May 5, 2014 in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from 3:00 – 6:00 PM Sunday, May 4, 2014 at the mortuary. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at Grace United Methodist Church, 2651 Telegraph Road, Davenport.Memorials may be made to the family. Tom was born September 23, 1932 in Wapello, IA. He was the son of Edgar and Melba (Schmalfeldt) Purdy. Shortly after graduating from Wapello Community High School in 1949 he enlisted in the United States Navy serving from 1951 to 1955.
He married Jean McKune on November 3, 1956 and had four children together, and then later married Kay Francies Grubbs on January 31, 1981 and enjoyed 33 wonderful years together.
He retired from Oscar Mayer in May 1992 after 36 plus years of employment.
Tom, along with his wife at his side, enjoyed their Sunday drives along the river and stopping for ice cream. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, fishing, golfing, playing cards, time spent at the cabin and tinkering around the house.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge and other organizations.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Kay; and his children, sons, Bryan (Gina DeWulf) Purdy, Eldridge, IA, Kevin (Sharlene) Purdy, Davenport, IA, David Purdy, Aledo, IL, and daughter, Carla (Jim) Secoy, Davenport, IA, Freddie (Linda) Grubbs, Davenport, IA, Ken Grubbs, Muscatine, IA, David (Patricia) Grubbs, Edmond, OK, and John (Marcia) Grubbs, Forest City, IA; 19 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews; two brothers, Ken Purdy, Columbus Junction, IA and Art Purdy, Davenport, IA; two sisters, Jeanette (Jack) Dotson, Wapello, IA and Miriam (Steve) Orr, Muscatine, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, baby Michelle.
Tom was a loving husband, father and grandfather, devoted brother and a friend to all.
