Webester Mayes, age 73, of Davenport, Iowa passed away on Thursday, September 16, 2021. Visitation will be held from 4 - 7 p.m. on Friday, October 1, 2021 at Peoples Missionary Baptist Church, located at 553 23rd Street, Rock Island, IL. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on October 2, 2021 at Weerts Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport. Webester Mayes was one of 15 children born to Lois and Sally (Gordon) Mayes, on October 4, 1947 in Oxford, MS. Webster united in marriage to Jerlean Kimmons in 1966 in Oxford, MS. To this union they had four children: Angela, Don, Tochcia, and Eric. He was also a good stepfather to Steve Kimmons. Webster also had a son, Aaron Crose.
In 1969, Webester and Jerlean moved to Davenport, IA where he worked for Titan Wheel International as a Spot Welder for 33 years, prior to his retirement in 2002. Thereafter, Webster worked for an additional 16 years at the Davenport Community School District, as a Food & Nutrition Van Driver.
For 26 years, Webester was an active member of People’s Missionary Baptist Church, serving in various roles and ministries, such as Choir President for 17 years, President of the Scholarship Ministry, Culinary Ministry, and Maintenance Ministry.
In his early years of life he enjoyed talking on his CB radio, where he was known as: Tiger Jones, and Ace of Spades. Webester was very social and enjoyed gardening, fishing, bowling, walking, sitting on his porch, and spending time with his family, friends, and church family.
Those left to cherish the memories of Webester are: his children Stevie (Debbie)Kimmons, Angela Mayes-Jackson (Michael), Don Mayes (Valorie), Tochcia Butler, and Eric Mayes; brothers Zannie, Jessie, Joe Jean, Wade Luster and Sylvester; sisters Sally Lois, Hazel, Betty and Arbedella; 18 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, a host of nieces & nephews, and longtime friend Cathey Scott.
Webester is preceded in death by: his parents Lois & Sally; wife Jerlean; son Aaron; brothers Arthur Lee, Willie Jay, Walter Earl, and Andrew; granddaughter Precious Hope-Rockwood; great-granddaughters Khylia & Kayleia Mims; and very best friend Callie Parks.
