Catherine (Cathie) Ann (Groh) Frederick, a beloved wife, mom, grandma, sister and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Chewelah, WA on September 10, 2025 after a saddening battle with ALS. Up until the end, Cathie showed gratitude, joy, love, and compassion towards her family, friends and animals.
Cathie was born in Spokane, WA on July 8, 1960 and grew up in Odessa, WA. She was a devoted wife to her husband Bradley (Brad) Frederick, a loving mother to her children Kara Frederick (Dalton Ball), Brice Frederick and a loving grandma to her granddaughter Emmalynn Ball.
Cathie graduated from Odessa High School in 1979 and shortly after attended Spokane Community College to study Culinary Arts. Cathie decided to switch gears and use her compassionate personality and got her CNA certification. Cathie moved back to Odessa after completing school and began dating the love of her life, Brad. It wasn’t long after they were dating that they knew it was a forever type of love. On June 12, 1982 Brad and Cathie tied the knot. Cathie worked various jobs up until Brad opened his body shop in 1989 and Cathie became the co-owner dealing with all of the paperwork and occasionally helping Brad on the vehicles when needed. Cathie always knew she wanted children, and in 1997 her dream came true when she gave birth to her daughter Kara on July 11, 1997. Her second biggest blessing was on August 12, 1999 when her son Brice was born. Cathie began her new occupation as a stay at home mom and continued this the rest of her life. Cathie and her family moved to Seattle, WA as Brad landed a new job opportunity. The family then moved Chewelah WA, where Cathie quickly fell in love with the nature and “million dollar view” in their backyard. Cathie’s second dream came true on May 23, 2024 when her granddaughter Emmalynn was born. Cathie loved holding her, playing with her and of course spoiling her with toys and clothes. Cathie was proud to be able to hold the title of Grandma.
Cathie had a range of hobbies she enjoyed. She loved cooking, gardening, sewing, scrapbooking, walking her dogs (Buck and Cruz), and almost any other craft you could think of. What Cathie enjoyed the most though, was sitting by the wood stove, looking at her “million dollar view” with her family, either drinking a hot cup of coffee or an ice cold dr. pepper. She especially enjoyed when their was a foot of snow on the ground and the trees also covered in snow.
Cathie’s world turned upside down on September 5, 2024 when she was diagnosed with ALS and told there was no cure. The year following her diagnosis, Cathie spent all the time she could with her family and friends.
Cathie will be deeply missed by many. We find peace knowing that she is no longer suffering from her disease.
Cathie is survived by her husband of 43 years, Brad Frederick, children; Kara (Dalton) Frederick and Brice Frederick, grandchildren; Emmalynn Ball, step-mother; Shirley Groh, brothers; Irvin (Karen) Groh, Kenneth (Bindy) Groh, sister-in-law; Angie (Daniel) Frederick, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Cathie is preceded in death by her parents, Teresa and Clement Groh Jr., her brothers Gregory and Ivan Groh and brother-in-law Roger Frederick.
To honor Cathie’s wishes there will be a celebration of life held at her home in Chewelah, WA on October 4h, 2025 from 12:00pm – 5:00pm. The address is 2355 Dutchman Way, Chewelah WA, 99109.
