

Life Journey of Bernice Arlene Paige Bowman
Bernice Arlene Paige was born to Rev. Harvey H. Paige and Sadie Elizabeth Bolling Paige on November 6, 1925. She was the second oldest child of this union. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Bowman, daughter Gloria Bowman Lucy, her parents, her sister Celestine Paige Wilder, and three brothers, Ernest, James, and Melvin Paige.
Bernice attended District of Columbia public schools and graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in 1943. She later attended Howard University and the District of Columbia Teachers College.
Bernice married Robert (Bob) Edward Bowman in 1945 and their union produced three daughters, Gloria (Lucy), Barbara (Luke Williams – deceased), and Lynda (Gregory J. Stewart). From these unions came three grandchildren Luke Carl Williams, Jacquelyn Marie Stewart, and Patryce Lynn Stewart.
Bernice worked for the U.S. federal government for over 30 years. The agencies included the U.S. Department Department of Defense (DOD), General Accounting Office (GAO), Health Education and Welfare (HEW), the Census Bureau and other departments under the U.S. Department of Commerce. She began as a clerk typist and retired in 1980 as a statistician. In addition to her career, Bernice was a Girl Scout Leader, substitute teacher, social club member, a member of many church clubs, and was the Secretary at the Victory Christian Baptist Church. For many years Bob and Bernice helped to set the foundation for the Victory Christian Baptist Church in Northeast Washington, DC.
