Born on October 28, 1937 to Dr. Hernando and Soledad Bautista in Cavite City, Philippines.
Always the diligent and hardworking student, Armando pursued his medical degree at the Pontifical University of Santo Tomas. After graduating in 1961, he completed a residency in Cavite City and decided to further hone his skills in the US, arriving in Connecticut in 1963. Armando’s mentor encouraged him to chose pathology as his main specialty, and he finished his pathology residency in 1968 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport, CT. His career then took him to Lansing, MI for a fellowship in pathology at Edward W. Sparrow Hospital, and ultimately St. Luke’s Hospital in Toledo,OH, where he spent over 25 years as Chief of Pathology.
During his residency in Bridgeport, he met fellow resident physician, Maria Helen Gapuz. They wed in 1967, and raised their family in Maumee, creating a home where all were welcome. Eventually, they moved to Beavercreek to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren.
Armando was a dutiful son & brother, a devoted husband & father, an indulgent Lolo, a compassionate & beloved doctor, a respected & accomplished leader, and a loyal friend.
A true Renaissance man, on any given day you might find him buzzing in his workshop, developing photos in his darkroom, acing serves on the tennis court, reeling in walleye on Lake Erie, birdying most of the back nine (in his dreams), waltzing on the dance floor, or traveling around the world. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, tinkering with tech, and entertaining family and friends.
He was generous with his time and talents, serving as President of the Filipino Association of Toledo, board member of the Special Commission on Relief & Education (S.C.O.R.E.) that provides scholarships, support, and disaster relief through medical missions around the world.
He is preceded in death by daughter, Maria Theresa, and leaves behind his wife of 57 years; sisters, Eumelia, Grace, and Orchid; daughters, Sandra (George), Christina (Tom), and Melissa (Matt); grandchildren, Lindsey, Bianca, Roman, Sabrina, Gabriel, Mia, Tabitha, Sophia, and Sybil; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews around the world.
He leaves a legacy of kindness and generosity.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests tributes be made to the Special Commission on Relief & Education of the Filipino Association of Toledo (S.C.O.R.E.).
