“We all know time never really stops for the great ones. It reaches out and wraps them in a cloak of immortality.” – Al Davis. Devin Edmunds passed away on Sept. 30, 2023, in Dayton, Ohio, following a long battle against cancer.
Devin was born in Springfield, Ohio, to David and D’Aun (Waggoner) Edmunds of Yellow Springs on April 27, 1977. Before his graduation from Greenon High in 1995, Devin lettered in soccer, basketball, and baseball – with baseball as his favorite. He was the friend everyone needed. His laid-back, easy spirit formed the bonds of lifelong friendships. Devin never held a grudge and remained a true friend through it all. Devin graduated from Ohio University in 1999 with a Bachelors in Business Administration; and from St. Thomas University in 2000 with an MBA.
While in south Florida, Devin interned for the Florida Marlins, and worked for the Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles, planning on being a baseball GM someday. Life brought him back to Ohio, where he embarked on a new career with Fidelity Investments. There, with the help of great mentors and teammates, he launched himself from the call center through every role in local branches, regional planning, and finally to VP Branch Leader (Richmond, Va). Along the way, Devin always found time to reach back and help the next one in the door, and never hesitated to be honest about how to do better.
On May 19, 2007, Devin married his best friend, Erica Davis, and together they built an amazing life. While work at Fidelity often meant moving, they enjoyed the adventure and made even more lifelong friends. From all over south Florida to DC to Virginia, houses became homes. In April 2012, they welcomed Devin’s “Hollywood Harper” – the absolute joy of Devin’s life.
To know Devin was to know his love for his people, anything sports, food, good sipping bourbon or tequila, and of course the Las Vegas Raiders. Devin golfed as often as time permitted, and then some. There were always texts flying back-and-forth during all the games, and Devin had an amazing ability to remember and share stats when pertinent to the game at-hand. And, a trip to the Edmunds’ always meant come ready to eat and try a new beer, hot sauce, or other delicious du jour. Devin’s Raiders were above all else – until that is, Devin could watch his daughter swim competitively. His greatest joy was watching her compete in the 2023 Virginia Age-group State Champs in seven events. What an honor that was.
He was our fighter, bravely facing the most powerful chemotherapies and major surgeries with his laid-back approach. The doctors said with his diagnosis, only 1 in 11 would see 14 months – Devin gave us 27. Devin made sure his family had what they needed – family and friends close by as he and Erica had recently returned to Ohio.
Devin is preceded in death by his grandparents (James and Rena Edmunds; Grant and Marjorie Waggoner), aunt Kathy Jurey, father-in-law Melvin Davis, and his faithful pup Dutch. In addition to his parents, Devin is survived by his wife Erica and daughter Harper Edmunds of the home. Devin is also survived by his brother Darrin (Leslie) Edmunds and their children Albany, Arlie, and Grant of Springfield, Oh; his Auntie Darryl and Uncle Mike Ospring and their children Chris, Ty, and Nikki; his Aunt Shirley Gratto and her children Tracy and Andy; mother-in-law Mary Davis, sister-in-law Erin (Neil Cook) Davis and his newest football convert Rhys Cook. Devin is also survived by countless friends who were his lifeline during this battle.
Devin will be honored with a memorial brick at Raiders Stadium. In lieu of flowers and for those who are interested: https://gofund.me/04f7865b.
Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to St. Jude’s. Devin was an avid supporter of St. Jude’s and their work to treat children facing cancer.
A celebration of life will be held on October 28th from 1-3pm at the Tobias Funeral Home in Beavercreek. Afterwards, friends and family are invited to the home to share a drink with Devin – opening his bourbon and tequila collection one last time.
Finally, Devin is grateful for Erica, D’Aun, Mary, and Harper for taking such great care of him. The family thanks the medical and care teams at Virginia Cancer Institute, the National Institutes of Health, and Kettering Health. And, there are simply no words for how appreciative Devin and the family are for those who called/texted and drove/flew to see him.
“Just win, Baby.”
