Essie M. Johnson, passed away peacefully Sunday July 24, 2016 at the age of 97. Essie was beloved resident of Walnut Creek Nursing Home. Always busy, Essie in her early years at Walnut Creek, was eager to help the staff there and would often assist them by pushing the other residents around in their wheel chairs. She was also the life of the party and loved to participate in all the activities and outings at Walnut Creek. One of these outings even included competing to sing the National Anthem before a Dayton Dragon's Baseball game with a choir group made up of fellow residents.
Prior to relocating in Dayton Essie lived in Castleberry, Alabama. There she and her husband E.J. raised their daughter, Faye. She was an avid gardener and a wonderful southern cook. She was proud to have served as a librarian at the Evergreen-Conecuh County Public Library for many years. She had a great interest in the study of genealogy. At the library she helped to compile and organize records that would assist many patrons in researching their ancestry. One of her greatest pleasures was to guide people on their search for their family roots. Working in a library was the perfect place of employment for her as she held a great passion for reading throughout her life. Essie was preceded in death by her 9 siblings, her husband, E.J. Johnson, and her daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Don Schierloh. She is survived by her dearly loved grandson, Lee (Molly) Schierloh and by their daughters, Katie and Emily Schierloh. Essie will be forever remembered for her kind heart and feisty spirit. There is no doubt that sweet Essie is now at peace in heaven, working hard to improve the gardens, and surround by her loved ones who died before her.
A private memorial will be held at a future date.
In lieu of flowers the family would kindly ask that donations be made in Essie's memory to:
