

Croghan, Harold Heenan of Kettering died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016 at Miami Valley Hospital. He was preceded in death by Patrick, an infant brother, parents Edmund Harold and Marie Heenan Croghan and paternal aunt Sister Mary Edmund of Omaha, NE. Born on May 28, 1924 in Sioux City, IA., he moved at age 5 with his family to Chicago, where his father taught high-school Latin and Spanish. He graduated from Lawrence College in Appleton, WI, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year. After his service in World War II, he was a Dexter Perkins Fellow in American History at the University of Rochester. There he met and married a coed, Gertrude Murphy. They celebrated 68 years of marriage this year. Halfway through the graduate program, Croghan decided to study law. He got his degree at Cornell University Law School and practiced law for 50 years, first in private practice in Kansas City, then as general counsel at Philips Industries Inc., where he was also executive vice president and a company director. As a U.S. Marine officer, he served admirably in World War II and the Korean conflict. He belonged to the Missouri and Ohio Bar Associations, Phi Delta Theta social fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa academic society and the Marine Corps Mustang Association Inc. Croghan is survived by four children and five grandchildren: John P. Croghan; Catherine (married to Bruce) Hallett of Plano, TX and their children Christopher and Grace; Loretto Anne Croghan of Brooklyn, NY and her daughter Antonia of San Francisco; Margaret (married to Matthew) Carper of Dayton and their sons John and Michael. He is also survived by his brother John Whitman (married to Rosemary) Croghan of Winnetka, IL and their six children and 28 grandchildren; and his sisters Anne O'Brien of Chicago and Mary Pickett of Winter Haven, FL and their children and grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be held at the Church of the Holy Angels, 1322 Brown St., Dayton on Thursday, Oct. 6th at 1:00 p.m. Visitation with the family is at the church one hour prior to the service.
