
21, 2015 in Centerville, Ohio. John was born October 2, 1913 to Edward
Anton and Lucile Weber and had two sisters, Margaret and Caroline. He
graduated Harvard in 1936. After joining the U.S. Army and
completing Officers Candidate School, he was assigned to
Quartermaster Corp supporting the Chinese Nationalist Army. John was
honorably discharged as a Captain in the Q.M.C. Reserve in 1947.
During his military career, he was assigned to the Chinese Language School
at Yale University, where he became fluent in Mandarin. In 1944 he flew
over "The Hump," arrived in China and was assigned to the Y Force Operations
staff as the Liaison officer to the Chinese Army. He successfully assisted
the Chinese in transporting supplies to the Chinese Expeditionary Force, who
engaged and attacked the Japanese in the Salween River Front. While in the
Q.M. finance Department, he was asked to create a form for payment of
officers and set up a branch finance office at Poseh Kwangsi Province,
China, due to his financial experience. He was also awarded the Bronze
Star. John would give Chinese children candy from his PX rations. They called him
'Wei Shangway' (Captain Wei). During the 1960's he continued this tradition by handing out candy from his car when he arrived home on summer evenings. The children of the Rochester, NY, Browncroft neighborhood called him, "The Candy Man." John married Dorothy Needham on June 10, 1950, and raised six children and founded Weber Automatic Sales, a vending business in
Rochester, NY. He was later a private investor. John was preceded in death by Dorothy in 2009, and by daughter Margaret Weber in 2015. He is survived by his five children: Edward (Angela
Marchesi), Jane Straus (Isidor), William (Susan), Barbara Castilano (Charlie), and Paul (Jeanne), and son-in-law, Britt Hall. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Amelia, Kaitlin, Hunter, Paul, Amy, Ryan, Sara, Elizabeth, Andrew, and Jane. The family would also like to thank his medical team of Dr. Carol Ryan and Dr. Schmidt for their care through the years, and the entire staff at Brookdale of Washington Twp.A private military internment service will be held at a later time.
