Josephine "Jo" Smith

Josephine "Jo" Smith, age 90, of Beavercreek, Ohio passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Trinity Community in Fairborn, Ohio. Jo was born on March 17, 1933 in Isaban, West Virginia to parents William Christian and Lula (Owens) Tompert who preceded her in death as well as her husband, Isaac W. Smith and son-in-law Del Terrell. Also preceding her in death are sisters Genevieve Morgan and Ladonna Lee and brother William Tompert Jr.

She is survived by a daughter Lisa Terrell and a son Eric Smith; grandchildren Tyler (Krystyna) Terrell and Jeremy (Mary) Terrell; great grandchildren Logan, Tara, Lily, Landon, Levi and Isaac; numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

Jo was raised in Bartley, West Virginia. She played the French horn in the High School Marching Band. Upon graduation from Big Creek High School class of 1951, she moved to Dayton, Ohio.

She met the love of her life, Isaac Smith and they were married on July 14, 1956 at The First Church of the Nazarene in Dayton, Ohio.

Jo made her working career at The Standard Register Company. She took a long break while raising her children. She made lifelong friends and continued their friendship even after retirement. She was also a consultant for Luzier Cosmetics for several years.

Jo and Isaac enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends. Jo was always excited to return for her high school reunions. They had great fun which included two reunion cruises. She sang in the church choir at the Linden Ave. Baptist Church. She was a very strong woman of faith and so inspiring to her family and many wonderful friends. Her children feel blessed and are grateful to be raised in a Christian home.

She stayed active and rode in the Thunder Road Bike-A-Thon. She had over 1,000 visits to Curves. She loved to walk. She enjoyed a Hot Air Balloon ride once during an anniversary celebration. She went white water rafting with Isaac; an experience done only once. She and Isaac square danced for a period of years and Jo was active in the Beavercreek Senior Center’s exercise classes where she made many friends. Her hobbies included ceramics, flower gardening, Bible study, exercising, shopping, reading and loving her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jo loved her family and took great pleasure in gathering together. She was so proud and loved being a grandmother.

Jo dealt with vision loss (Macular Degeneration) for 25 years. She struggled with dementia the last several years of her life. The family would like to thank the staff, nurses and caregivers at Trinity Community of Fairborn for their care and compassion over the last five months that she lived there. An extra special thanks to the exceptional comfort care by the Hospice nurses of Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton while at Trinity.

Jo loved the appearance of freshly fallen snow and fluffy white clouds. God provided this for her on her last earthly day before eternal life. We rejoice in knowing that she is in heaven and reunited with loved ones and with Isaac again after longing for him for so many years. We now have a precious angel watching over us.

A visitation for Jo will be held Friday, January 26, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Tobias Funeral Home - Beavercreek Chapel, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Rd, Dayton, Ohio 45432. A funeral service will occur Friday, January 26, 2024 at 11:00 AM, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Rd, Dayton, Ohio 45432. A burial will occur Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 11:30 AM at Fleming County Cemetery, 330 East Water Street, Flemingsburg, KY 41041.
