

Shaffer, Lloyd R., age 90, of New Carlisle, passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2013 @ the VA Medical Center. Born February 10, 1922, in West Alexandria, Ohio, he enjoyed playing baseball and was an avid football & boxing fan. He joined the United States Marine Corps on November 3, 1942; he was a member of the 2nd Marine Division, B Company, First Raider Battalion. He fought in the Pacific campaigns of Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa during World War II. After spending 15 months in a hospital in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii recovering from wounds suffered on the battlefield, he returned home in 1945, where he later joined the Dayton Police Department before becoming an Electrician in the mid 1950’s. He went on to become a Master Electrician and the owner of Shafco Electric from 1960 to 1980. He met the love of his life, Esther V. Finkbohner, formerly of Narrowsburg, NY, in 1950 and they were married on September 18, 1952. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Laura (Davis) Shaffer; sisters Hazel Thompson, Velma Conning, Edna Medler; brother Karl “Pete” Shaffer and his beloved daughter, Connie Lee (Shaffer) Garlough. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Esther V. (Finkbohner) Shaffer; son Loyd “Bob” Shaffer and his wife Charmaine Shaffer; his one & only granddaughter, Ashley Marie Shaffer and his brother, Edward “Bud” Shaffer along with several nieces and nephews. Funeral service 10 am Saturday, February 9, 2013 at TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME – BELMONT CHAPEL, 648 Watervliet Ave, Dayton, Pastor Roger Hamilton officiating, with interment to follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Tipp City.
