Margaret C Plagens

On Tuesday, December 7, 2021, Margaret C. Plagens, loving wife and mother of three children, passed away at the age of 85. Margaret was born on October 10, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan to Alexander and Catherine (Young) Keith. She graduated from Highland Park High School in 1954. Margaret studied accounting and business administration at the University of Detroit. She worked various full- and part-time jobs as a bookkeeper and office assistant, but her true joy was being a mother and homemaking. On Sept. 5, 1964, Margaret married the love of her life, Richard J. Plagens, whom she met in evening college at the University of Detroit. They raised two sons, Christopher and Gregory, and one daughter, Sandra. Margaret’s life was centered around her family and home. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, volunteering in the school library and swimming. Margaret had fond memories of swimming at Williams Lake while staying in the cottage her father built. She will be remembered for her calm, quiet way, for her unconditional love of family, and for her love of ice cream. From an early age she scooped and served ice cream at her aunt’s sweet shop in Detroit. As she was fond of saying late in life, “I scooped a lot of scoops.” In the late stages of her illness, when she would not eat hardly anything else, she would always take a bite of ice cream. Margaret was preceded in death by her loving and caring husband Richard J. Plagens; parents Alexander and Catherine; brother-in-law Gary Plagens; and very special friends June Owen and Sheila Fay Cortina. She is survived by her children, Christopher Plagens; Gregory (Vikki) Plagens; Sandra (Matthew) Siler; granddaughter Eva Siler; brother-in-law James and sister-in-law Sandra Plagens; sister-in-law Laurel Plagens; and special friends Dick and Dwayne Wandoff. A funeral service will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Kettering, Ohio on Wednesday, December 15, at 10:30. Visitation will be held for family and friends an hour prior to the service.
