Marjorie Ellen (Brower) Nelson was born to parents Earl and Velma (Daily) Brower on September 9, 1933 in Preble County, Ohio. She grew up on a farm there and attended Lanier Township School for grades 1-12 and graduated in 1951.
She went to work for William Terrell, attorney-at-law in Eaton, Ohio. She was later employed at Preble County National Bank in Eaton.
She met Don Nelson of Richmond, Indiana at a friend’s wedding, and married him on September 7, 1952. They moved to Eaton, Ohio. Their 1st daughter, Pamela Sue, was born July 18, 1954 and their 2nd daughter, Teresa Ann, was born March 6, 1957. They built a home in Kettering, Ohio and moved there in March of 1963.
Marjorie was the bookkeeper for Don’s building business for 25 years, also managing the self storage facility they built. She became a notary public to facilitate those responsibilities. She joined the Women’s Club of the Home Builders Association and served as their president in 1967. In 2001, Marjorie took on the job of cash auditor for Stein Mart. Although she enjoyed that job very much, she had to give it up in 2009, due to health problems.
Marjorie and Don lived in the house they built until they retired in 2010 and went to live at One Lincoln Park in Kettering, Ohio.
Marjorie’s faith was very important to her. She was initially a member of Eaton Church of the Brethren, where she played piano and organ for services. After moving to Kettering and driving back to that church every Sunday morning for a couple of years, the Nelsons found a new Church home at Prince of Peace Church of the Brethren, where she helped with ice cream socials and drove her daughters to choir practice. When that church went through some changes, Marjorie and Don tried other churches, before finding their final church home at Christ United Methodist Church.
Marjorie enjoyed many activities and hobbies. She was active on the Women’s Club bowling team for many years. She would fill the dining room table every Christmas with many different kinds of cookies. She liked crossword puzzles, even working them, with her daughter’s help, after her macular degeneration made it almost impossible to see the puzzle. She enjoyed many types of crafts, especially crocheting and cross-stitch, making many beautiful items for their home. Bridge and duplicate bridge were special passions. She played every chance she had, usually multiple times per week at the peak! She loved it. The last pastime she gave up as she got sicker was crocheting, completing more than 40 prayer shawls for the church.
Marjorie is survived by her husband Don, her daughter and son-in-law Pam (Nelson) and Joe Scripture, her daughter Teresa and many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and great grand nieces and nephews.
