Aunty Irene as I called her was not my aunt but my mother's best friend of 82 years they died 5days aoart.Irene became a great friend of mine through my mother's illness becoming my listening ear.I wrote to her when mum couldn't and told her all the news 12 pages minimum every month.she said she enjoyed these letters and felt as if she was sitting in our kitchen having a chat.she called our family her second family.as a child I remember fondly receiving beautiful wrapped gifts 3in particular stick in my mind a fisher price spinning top with a plastic done which a train inside it oh how I tried to get into that train fisher price toys are unbreakable.My second favourite thing was a ragady Ann electric toothbrush myself and Susan Walsh Julie's daughter got 1each Susan had hers up till very recently.my favourite were hair ties in flour sent colours I thought I was the bee's knees in the cats pajamas.
She must have been very brave to head off to America with travel so expensive at the time and communication so slow.
To all Irene's friends and family I pray for you all and hope that there is a heaven because she is surely there watching over so all 

Dear Irene,
We have corresponded for many many years ,this final goodbye is the hardest to write. When a letter arrived the other day and I realised it was the last,as you were gone ,I was heartbroken.
Although there was a big distance you were the best Aunt in the world, visiting whenever you could with your family so that we all now know them so well.
You were extremely generous,loving, caring,organised and funny.You had a big personality enjoying a laugh and drama and yourself and Pauline could talk for hours on end into the small hours .
Mom looked up to you like a big sister and friend.You also saved Dads life with your medical knowledge all those years ago and meant I grew up with a father.
I cant thank you enough for that. I will miss you immensely.
Sleep well and say hello to Uncle Val from mexxxooo

Sincere condolences to our cousins Erin Paul Tony and their families on the loss of their dear mother/ grandmother.She was our beautiful Aunt and she was  beautiful in every way and so kind to everyone. As children I remember the excitement we had at Christmas when A. Irene, Uncle Val and our cousins 'came home'. One   Christmas, someone said : 'Where's Irene?'She was upstairs putting ribbons and bows on presents she had carefully thought about for everyone. She treated everyone with such love and respect. She made you feel so special. The cards I received from childhood I have kept and I will cherish forever. They are filled with the well wishes, kind thoughts and even good advice that was so personal to you. She had time for everyone. 
I'll never forget how she organised every day of our amazing visit to Ohio from Indian reserve to Kings Island like only Irene could organise- effortlessly! I equally remember her delicious chicken and broccoli bake and tuna fish sandwiches, all made with love. She loved being surrounded by family. Her creativity was evident all around her house, her impressive  and beautiful painting of the Salmon Weir as well as her eye for decor and how beautifully dressed she always was. She was an inspiration on how to be creative and positive, look after yourself and care from the heart about others. All the little details of her life reflected that love from the very artistic to the very practical.That is why she left such an impression on everyone. She is forever an inspiration and forever in my heart. Lisa

Thank you for teaching me all you knew about makeup and eye contouring when I was a teenager. I aspired to be as stylish as you (then I gave up)
Clinique makeup counter in Dayton will surely go out of business now that you are gone....

I would like to share my deepest sympathy for Paul, Erin, Tony, Pauline, Joan and all of Irene's grandchildren, nieces, nephews and family.   I fondly recall my first adventure overseas at age 15 with Irene, Paul and Tony to visit Mrs. O'Reilly near Eyre Square in Galway.  I was introduced to fresh salmon, a furnace stoked with peat, the meaning of a pint and spirited Irish hospitality.  I also recall our departure from Shannon Airport back to the States.  Irene wasn't pleased with some aspect of our airline tickets.  We ended up in a first class upper deck and I tasted champagne for the first time with an opportunity to watch the Concord fly by at Mach 2.  Irene had a warm, generous spirit and blessed the lives of her family and friends.   I raise a glass of gratitude for the opportunity to know her. -Bill

[posting on behalf of my mom Bernadette] "Irene was a great great friend -- always so vibrant and willing to do whatever a friend needed; she was such a support for me during Eddie's illness...I miss her dearly."  ...my mom notes that Irene's family hosted her brother Gabriel when he was attending UC Galway and they were always so good to him...she is in our thoughts.

I remember Irene with great fondness! She and I worked together in Labor and Delivery at St. E's in the late 1950s and early '60s. She was a joy to be around, and had a wonderful work ethic. To my lasting gratitude, she agreed to stay with me during the birth of my first child - I don't know what I would have done without her! Rest in peace, dear Irene.

Dear Erin, Paul and Tony,
Please accept our sincere sympathy. 
We loved your mother dearly, and have many special memories of her, and your family.  We will always remember the times when your dad walked us home after babysitting!
We still treasure the Waterford crystal she brought us.
The parties the neighborhood shared were so much fun, and we remember the birthday parties Dad had in the back of his El Camino!

Irene was born a stone’s throw from the Claddagh region in Galway and more than anyone I know, she exemplified  the Claddagh values of love, loyalty and friendship. Her love was  real and all-encompassing, her friendship steadfast and strong and her loyalty to people or causes  fierce and unyielding. I count myself so privileged to have enjoyed her friendship and support during the last twenty or so years here in Dayton.  We laughed, cried and played together through the ups and downs of life.  I grieve with all her friends and family as I say farewell to my beloved friend.  “Slan go foill”.  Elizabeth.

Dearest Aunty Irene expressed her love for the entire family with her support which never went unnoticed. 
She had a kind heart and never forgot anyone's birthday and offered such wonderful advice at the right time. I have fond memories of the excitement we felt as kids when Aunty Irene would come and visit us in Ireland. We would count down the days to her arrival and make "Céad míle fáilte" banners to hang over the front door to welcome her "back home". She was an intelligent woman with a strong medical background and a mine of medical information. Her advice and perspective was gained through her selfless dedication, helping others in her profession as an RN.   She had a deep love of family and was a true matriarch.  At this sad time I offer my deepest sympathy to my mother (Pauline), Aunty Joan, cousins Erin, Paul and Tony (and Michelle) and her grand kids Kevin-Patrick, Shaun, Derek and Danielle who took such good care of Irene, who's life she impacted greatly. All will miss Irene dearly. I pray that the void she leaves in our hearts is filled with happy memories of her kindhearted nature.
Aunty Irene will be sadly missed and will assume her rightful place in heaven next to Uncle Val. RIP 

I had the pleasure of taking care of Miss Irene on her last night with us! She seemed to be a very special lady as I had the pleasure of sharing wonderful stories and pictures of her with her three awesome children. They so loved their mother as you could feel it and my heart was breaking for them yet could feel how blessed this family was to have so many years with their mother! Thanks for letting me share these moments! 

My mom taught me what it means to love, to forgive, and to help. She was always there for me, no matter what the situation was. And when I talked to her, it never mattered how great, silly, complicated, or sad the conversation was, she just wanted to know what was on my heart and how she could help me. My mom  challenged me to become the man I am today. She is now my guardian angel, able to be with me wherever I go, and whenever I need her. I miss you so much, and I always will. I love you, mom!
