
Age 80, of Oakwood, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 25, 2015 at Hospice of Dayton after an illness since February and complications from a recent stroke. Born to parents, Abdul Khan and Akhtari Syed in Kaimganj, India. Mumtaz was a man of the world, but humble. Raised and educated in India, taught university in Pakistan, did post-graduate study in Holland and received a PhD in Political Science in Belgium. He also received an MLS from Case Western Reserve University. He was a scholar, artist, teacher, loving father and husband, and friend. He had a passion for learning, whether politics, ceramics, photography or tennis, being active with gardening and regular exercise, or cooking and enjoying good food. He lived life with energy and focus. Preceded in death by mother-in-law, Elizabeth Wellman and sister-in-law, Susan Vitello. Survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Becky, beloved daughter, Yasmeen, and her boyfriend, Douglas Fulmer; sibling in-laws, Sandy (Rena) Wellman, Bob (Mary Lou) Wellman, Chick (Beth) Wellman, Thomas Vitello and Anne Melvin; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many dear friends and neighbors. Special thanks for the loving care he received at Lincoln Park Manor and Hospice of Dayton. Celebration of Life to be held Saturday, October 31 at Christ United Methodist Church, Parlor Room, 3440 Shroyer Rd., Kettering, OH. Reception starting at 11:00 am, Reflections & Sharing at 11:30 am, Reception continues and light lunch after ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Dayton Opera, Dayton International Peace Museum, or Sinclair Community College Foundation (designate Humanities or Ceramics Department).
