

Myrna Joyce Filer 72, born in Lake Charles, Louisiana is the eldest of 5 children born to the union of Felton J. Filer Sr. and Willie Mae Goosby-Filer. The family relocated to Akron, Ohio in 1953 and lived there until 1963 until the family moved to Los Angeles, California. Joyce graduated from Dorsey High School in Los Angeles, California in 1967. Upon graduation Joyce was employed at Pacific Bell Phone Company as a telephone operator as she attended college at Cal-state Long Beach. Joyce ultimately obtained her bachelor’s degree and worked her way up to Sales Manager. Joyce took an early retirement after 15 years of service and went on to pursue other endeavors. Joyce went on to be a Travel agent due to her love for travel and the flexibility to care for her son. Joyce became Leimert Park’s top travel agent.
Joyce married William Smith in 1970 and had her beloved son, Sheldon, in 1977.
Joyce also dedicated her knowledge and wisdom as an assistant teacher in the LA Unified School System before leaving Los Angeles in 2007 to move back to Ohio to be close to her son, Grandson and Granddaughter.
“Mama Joyce” as she was affectionately known as, to many, enjoyed traveling and helping others achieve their lifelong dreams of traveling. Her son and Grandchildren are her pride and joy!
Joyce was preceded in death by her mother Willie Mae Filer, father Felton J. Filer, and brother L. Ray Filer. She leaves to cherish her memory her son Sheldon Filer Smith, her brothers Joe Filer, S. Wayne Filer, Derrick (Lorrie) Filer, 2 grandchildren Quinn Smith, and Skylar Smith, and a longtime close friend Kenyaka Beckley and host of relatives and friends.
