Ron Tricarico (1933-2022) was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Ron attended the prestigious Brooklyn Technical High School, and studied Civil Engineering at the University of Dayton. He held several construction and engineering jobs responsible for building much of Dayton’s infrastructure, including the interchange of I-75 and St. Rte. 35. In the mid-1970s Ron started his own successful land surveying company which he ran until his retirement in 2006 at age 73. He taught surveying at Clark State College in Springfield.
Ron was a lifeguard on Coney Island and continued swimming almost daily until he was 88. He was a Boy Scout and was just shy of attaining Eagle Scout when he was drafted into the US Army for the Korean War. He trained as a member of the Combat Engineers, but the war ended just before he was deployed. He served on various islands in the Pacific, building runways and bunkers.
Ron was a lifelong sports devotee, especially of his beloved New York teams: the Yankees, Giants, Knicks and Rangers. He frequently scheduled vacations to coincide with Yankees away games, but was omnivorous in his sports consumption and his knowledge of all things athletic was encyclopedic. He coached CYO track at St. Luke’s in Beavercreek for over 40 years, and hundreds of student athletes ran for “Mr. T”.
Gregarious and outgoing, Ron embodied the saying “a stranger is a friend I haven’t met yet.” He was generous to an extraordinary degree. In addition to his coaching, he donated blood for his entire adult life, totaling many gallons, one pint at a time. Proud of his Italian heritage, Ron volunteered for the Sons of Italy. He donated to the Special Olympics, Boys Town, Ohio Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, Red Cross, and various animal rescue organizations, among many others.
Ron passed away on February 14th, 2022, after a short COVID-related illness. Preceded in death by his father, John Sr., mother Mary (Cantelmi) Tricarico, brothers John Jr. (Tina), Eugene, and Richard. Survived by his wife of 57 years Patricia (Murphy), sons Douglas (Caroline) of New Hampshire, and Curtis of Beavercreek, sister Mary Ann VanHanehan (Lyons, NY), stepmother Anna, sisters-in-law Penny and Harriet, many devoted nieces and nephews and numerous loving Murphy family in-laws.
A Memorial Mass will be held 10:30AM Saturday, March 12, 2022 at St. Luke Catholic Church; family will greet friends one hour prior to mass.
