

He was born in Dayton in 1947 to Francis “Dutch” and Opal Gard. He served his country in the US Marine Corps, including two tours in Vietnam, then later continued to serve in the United States Air Force. After serving his country, he completed his career working for the Veteran Affairs and earning numerous awards.
Steve had a desire to learn and continually study God’s Word. He enjoyed sharing his passion with friends and family. His favorite Bible verse was Matthew 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all things shall be added to you”.
Steve treasured traveling with family and friends creating many memories and too many stories to tell.
Steve loved watching sports, but especially Dayton Flyers basketball. He was a long-time season ticket holder and traveled the country to watch and support the team.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Francis “Dutch” and Opal Gard; his sister, Sharon Poffenberger; and in-laws Linn Poffenberger, Roger Powers, and Robert and Patricia Dieringer.
He is survived by loving wife Patricia of 55 years; his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Heather; along with his two beautiful granddaughters, Emmalyn and Madison. His siblings, Francine Powers, Jim (Vickie) Gard, Jeannie (Terry) Bohache, along with countless nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Steve will be Thursday, October 30, 2025 from 8:00am to 9:45am at Tobias Funeral Home in Beavercreek, followed by a funeral service at 9:45am and burial at Dayton VA Cemetery.
