William Paul Sayer died peacefully surrounded by family on January 2 after a brief illness. He was born June 7, 1925 to John and Clara (Schulten) Sayer. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years Winifred (Finch), an infant great grandson, Levi P. Heffernen, and his brothers “Jack” and “Tom”. He was a joy and inspiration to is family.
Bill grew up as the second of four boys in St. Anthony Parish, where their family was first in their neighborhood of entrepreneurs to have a refrigerator and a radio! At Chaminade, he played football, was a Monogram Club member and graduated early to help with the war effort. After completing a year at UD, he enlisted in the V12 Navy Training Program for officers where he was part of the Signal Corps. As the war ended, he completed his studies at Brown University and then sailed on the USS Wisconsin on a Goodwill Tour.
He and Win lovingly raised their family in Corpus Christi Parish where he was a lifelong member of the choir and sung in the plays. Bill worked in sales for a short time but most of his career was as a cost accountant at Standard Register and SCM/Allied Egry. He was an avid tennis player and a good swimmer and diver, never losing his love of the water. Upon retirement he and Win wintered in Florida where they met a host of new friends and enjoyed the sunshine and coastal waters. Following in his father’s footsteps as an artist, he began to paint watercolors. Many of Bill’s paintings are proudly displayed in the homes of his extended families.
As a nearly 75-year subscriber to the Dayton Daily News and a lifelong Daytonian, he followed local news and especially sports. However, his morning started after he completed the day’s jumble. As he adopted new technology, he followed lots of his children and grandchildren on the Find Your Friends app, delighting in their activities. He perused multiple family picture streams to remain intimately connected and conversant with all his family.
He was witty and kind and always had a few “funnies”, Win especially loved his humor! He was devoted to her as she became ill, providing selfless care to her for many years. As devout Catholics, Bill and Win raised seven “good kids” who survive them.
