Mr. Askew died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011. He was born Sept. 25, 1931, in
Dothan to William Henry Askew III and Ruby Flowers Jones Askew. He was a
loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be missed dearly.
He married Joanna Martin in 1952. Family was incredibly important to
him, and was known by all as a very loving family man.
Charles graduated with a degree in aeronautical engineering from
Northrop Aeronautical Institute in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1955. He
worked for NASA at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville from
1959 until his retirement in 1992.
He began his career with NASA working on the Saturn V rocket as a technical adviser of construction. He continued his career as the manager of program planning and control for the Hubble Space and
Chandra telescope programs.
Charles was also an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Askew is survived by his wife, Joanna Askew, his son Charles Ray Askew, Jr and wife Carlene of Priceville, his daughters Claudia Parker of Decatur, Catherine Askew of Huntsville, Carol Askew Woods and husband Mike of Melbourne, Fla, his brother Joseph Askew of Calera, AL, and six grandchildren: Katy, Rachel, and Margaret Parker, Anna and Charles Addison Askew, and Nick Woods.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry and Ruby Flowers Askew, two brothers Bill and Pitt Askew, and one sister Anne Flaherty.
Pallbearers will be Charles Ray Askew Jr., Charles Addison Askew, Mike
Woods, David Manthey, Ken Wallick, Jim Gillikin, Eugene Yarbrough and Jeremy Yarbrough.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Community
Free Clinic of Decatur.
