

Marvin James Terry Jr., 83, of Decatur, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. He was born November 27, 1930, in Colbert County to Marvin James Terry Sr. and Myrtle Pearl Lindsey Terry.Funeral service will be Thursday, January 9, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tim Lovett and Pastor Bill Lykins officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Mausoleum. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.Marvin Terry resided in Decatur most of his life. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Athens College after graduating from Riverside High School in Decatur. After serving in the Air Force for three years during the Korean War, he returned to Decatur where he married Shirley Compton. Mr. Terry was an insurance executive at Mutual Savings Life Insurance Company for many years. He was a member of the Civitan Club and assisted with the Junior Achievement program. He was also a Gideon and Deacon at Grace Baptist Church. After retirement from Mutual Savings, he became a home builder. Mr. Terry's hobbies were woodworking, golf, and he enjoyed "coffee with the boys" from Mutual Savings, a monthly gathering of men retired from the company. He had a positive influence on many people and was a loving Christian husband and father who prided himself on caring for his immediate and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Peggye Terry Harris; and one brother, Billy P. Terry Sr.Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Shirley Compton Terry; one son, Jay Marvin Terry (Ellen) of Hoover; one daughter, Renee Terry Wall of Tanner; three brothers, Lindsay Terry of St. Augustine, Fla., Wyckoff Terry of Moulton and Robert Terry of Decatur; three grandchildren, Jaclyn Terry, Jeff Terry and Evan Wall; and several nieces and nephews.Honorary pallbearers will be his brothers, grandsons and nephews.
