Funeral for Melba McWhorter Steelman, 87, of Decatur will be today, February 20, 2011, at 2:30 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with Dr. Ben Hayes of Southside Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Steelman passed away February 17, 2011, in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born December 16, 1923, to Homer and Mamie McWhorter of Lawrence County. After graduation, she moved to Decatur and made it her home, marrying Gentry Steelman. She was a loving wife, mother and friend, and was a dedicated member of Southside Baptist Church for almost 60 years. She was also a member of the senior choir, and enjoyed the great Christian fellowship she received from it.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Mamie McWhorter; her husband, Gentry Wilson Steelman; infant granddaughter, Angela Steelman; and sisters, infant Hilda McWhorter, Reba Pike, Frances Royer and Doris Gillespie.
Survivors include her son, Jerry Steelman and his wife, Pat, of Stansbury Park, Utah; daughter, Patricia Steelman Laseter and her husband, Jim Laseter of Cullman; four grandchildren, grandson, Christopher Steelman and his wife, Jennifer, of Stansbury Park, Utah, granddaughter, Jennifer Steelman of Washington, D.C., grandson, Brandon Laseter of Madison, granddaughter, Amy Laseter of Cullman; great-grandson, Hayden Steelman of Stansbury Park, Utah; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Hospice of North Alabama for all the things they have done during this time.
