

Funeral service for Robert Stapleton Doherty, 84, will be Thursday, March 5, 2020 at 12 Noon at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Orville Collins officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing. Visitation will begin one hour before the service at Roselawn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
Mr. Doherty died on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at Summerford Nursing Home. He was born August 17, 1935 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to Robert S. Doherty and Mildred Harwell Doherty. Preceding him in death were his father, mother, and brother James H. Doherty.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda Jackson Doherty; two sons, Robert A. Doherty (Lisa), James M. Doherty (Monica); daughter, Kimberley A. Powell; five grandchildren, Zachary Gillette (Sophie), Morgan Doherty, Thomas Doherty, Patrick Doherty, and William Doherty; two great grandchildren, Mac and Sage Gillette.
Bob served in the United States Air Force as a Russian Linguist. After his military service, he attended the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg where he received both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. He worked for, and retired from, NASA after 30 years. Following his retirement he worked as a NASA contractor for ARI and SAIC, Huntsville.
In his retirement, Bob enjoyed genealogical research and was an active member and former president of the Tennessee Valley Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. He enjoyed antique auctions and, together with his wife Linda, was in the antique business for several years.
Bob became a Christian and was baptized at age 62 at Autumnwood Baptist Church, where he was active for many years.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and family friends.
