 September was a long, brutal month.  the shock, sorrow and sadness of gary's passing has hit us all.  I am, however, doing better as the feelings of loss are being slowly replaced with wonderful, warm, fond memories of gary and of growing up beside him.  how lucky I was to have him there.

 

my crib was in his room, next to mom and dad's bedroom.  he watched as I outgrew my crib. my skinny  legs began to stick out of the crib between the bars.   gary did not complain when I eventually joined him on grandma Hewitt's concave mattress.  just an occasional reflexive elbow when I would  loose my grip on the edge of the mattress and roll into him.

 

I remember trying to stop his fast, hardball pitches with that paper thin catcher's mit.  ouch! that stung!  I never did learn to stop the ball with the fat, padded part of the glove, then let it roll into the pocket.  gary was so much better than me at sports, school and a lot of stuff, life really,  because he could focus and learn and apply himself.

 

one  of my fondest memories of gary is a composite of many times , days, weeks, months and years, I suppose  symbolized in my mind by an old photo of gary and i in shorts, no shirts, on our tricycles in front of 139 Ellicott street on a hot summer's day.  we were preschoolers before there were preschools, growing up on the mean streets (o.k., sidewalks) of rottenchester's 19th ward, I guess.

 

if we came in possession of a nickel,  we could ride all the way down (a full three houses away),  to  the ellicott street market, there we would buy a popcicle twin pop(two sticks) after agreeing on the flavor /color (sky blue is still not a flavor!).  joe, the grocer, would expertly split the frozen treat on the edge of the glass candy counter for us.  we were in a sweet, messy heaven.  when we got home, mom would have to clean us up before the ants got to us and our 20 little, sticky fingers touched anything.  if we ever had a dime we could add a pocket full of penny candy to the mix.

 

to get a dime was easy.  you just needed to run an errand for aunt lil, next door.  she and uncle George were rolling in dimes or rolls of dimes.

 

I remember gary sometimes letting me ride behind him on the rear running board  of his tricycle balancing with my hands on his shoulders.  he took me up and down the block and just a little  around the corner on Maxwell avenue or chandler street where we could no longer see our house, stretching our wings ever so slightly but never out of earshot of mom. 
 that's what big brothers are all about and it is when I am reminded of a line from the poem, funeral blues by w. h. Auden: 

 

"he was my north, my south, my east and west"

 

it is used a lot.  kinda smaltzy but kinda true.

Fond memories of Gary while we worked together for a year or so for New York STate Labor Dept. Fun guy to work with - hard worker but enjoyed a good laugh too. Great guy - condolences to MaryAnn and family

Mary Anne, Joel and Carolyn,  my deepest sympathies to you all. I have many wonderful memories of Gary to cherish.  Love to everyone.

Looking at all the photos there are some great memories  and stories but I want to add just a few more. Let's start with football at St Monica's with the infamous jock strap with the metal cup that Gary presented before each game,our bus rides to Aquinas stopping at Critic's for coffee before school playing In The Mood on the juke box,the 57 Chevy and the Volvo,the famous change purse,his nickname Cousy for his basketball skills etc.My last fun memory is when Gary came over to Ft Myers for the Edison parade and stayed overnight and serenaded us with his wonderful snoring. Many laughs.  Gary you are a good friend. Rest in peace ""PAL"

To the Heifferon Family ,So sorry for your loss,I have fond memories from the day"s on Ellicott St. Playing basketball in his driveway,playing football at St.Monica:s grammar school and spending a lot of our summer days together. I am glade I got to see him last year and share some memories, He will be in my prayers.

as your only baby brother, I was blessed to have you in my life for a short 68+ years.  you shared with and taught me and everyone you touched, so very much and you have given us even more.

it feels like you got around me, one more time and you are going in for another, what you always made look easy, layup.  just like dad taught us.
