Amma Jean Hughes was born November 16, 1928 to Arthur & Vennie (Coburn) Alexander in Pauls Valley, where the family lived until 1944. They then moved to a farm north of Verden, where she attended high school. There she would meet her husband, J.C. They married June 4, 1949 in Verden. Following their marriage, they moved to Oklahoma City, where they made their home and raised their children, Roger & Judy (except for a short period, when they followed work & family to California). In 1964, they purchased their first home on SE 44th Street, where they would live for the next 53 years.
After a life-changing health event, Amma Jean moved to Blanchard to be loved and cared for in the home of her daughter, Judy. Her grandson, Mike, became her daily companion; they spent many hours talking about her life, the Lord, and heaven. After her death, Mike shared that he realized just how blessed he was to share that time with her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur & Vennie Alexander, three sisters, Ozie Smith, Laverna Pierce Joyner, and Floudelle Johnson; six brothers, Cecil, Coyce, Junior, ‘Doe’, Hoyt and A.V., as well as many extended family members. Also preceding her in death was her husband, J.C. of 64 years, and her son, Roger.
She ‘idolized’ her oldest brother, Cecil, as younger sisters tend to do. He was killed in battle during WWII and was buried in Holland. She often shared her memories of him. One of the special events of her life was when the Dutch gentleman that cares for Cecil’s grave traveled to the US and paid a visit to Mom. She was especially close to her younger sister, Floudelle. When those two got together, there was bound to be stories…and lots of laughter!
She is survived by a daughter, Judy Blalock, of Blanchard, daughter-in-law, Twylah Hughes of Oklahoma City; one granddaughter, Kelly Place & husband, Peetie of Blanchard; three grandsons, Russel and wife, DeAnna of Oklahoma City, Randy & wife, Shelly, of Edmond and Michael Blalock of Blanchard. She also leaves behind two great-granddaughters, Hunter Hughes & Molly Blalock; as well as six great-grandsons, Wesley & Nicholas Quisenberry, Sam, Ryan, & Jack Place and Hayden Hughes. Not to be forgotten are her extended family and long-time friends.
Amma Jean was a born-again believer and spent many years teaching 4th grade Sunday school & VBS at Soldier Creek Baptist Church. She invested her life in children. She was a full-time mother and defined what it meant to be a ‘momma bear’ when it came to protecting her own. She loved being a grandmother. She never learned how to say the word “No” when asked if she was free to watch one- or all – of the grandkids. As the grandchildren married, she welcomed each ‘in-law’ as one of her own. Then the great-grandbabies started coming and she was always the first to offer to help out. When the last one got too big…she was at a loss! Of course, she was in her 80’s by then … and deserved a well-earned break! What a blessing it was to her family, to have such a treasure!
The family owes a debt of gratitude to Mom’s long-time neighbor, Bobby. Mom & Dad regarded him as their adopted son, and he, in turn, treated them like parents. After Dad’s death in 2013. Bobby stepped in to provide lawn care, shelter during storms and more than a few visits on Mom’s back porch. His caring & generous spirit allowed Mom to stay in her beloved home until her health required the move to Judy’s.
Her most recent concern was how she was going to attend Hunter’s upcoming evening wedding, since she was normally in bed by that time. Now she will have the best seat of all, on Heaven’s shore, right between her husband and son.
Memorial services are scheduled for Monday, July 15, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Soldier Creek Baptist Church, 9020 SE 15th Street, Midwest City, OK 73150. A graveside service will follow at the Sunny Lane Cemetery, Del City. Services are under the direction of the Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home, Del City, OK.
