Dianne, My Daughter knew your dad for a brief moment, and she would always say  that he was such a nice man. I told her yes, the whole family is nice. I love all of you guys, stay strong.

May your memories of the wonderful times you shared with your loved one comfort you and your family, today and always.

To the Higgs family, we all loved your dad from the moment we met him at Jim and Dana's wedding rehearsal in 1996 and feel blessed to have gotten to know him over the years. I know he was a hero not only to his country, but to his wife, his kids and to his grandkids. The very things he taught you will help you right now. We are praying for you all and we love you.

Dad, this is probably the hardest thing I've ever had to do. How do I say a final goodbye? When I left you Saturday night, I didn't realize it would be for the last time.  You have been with me every step of the way for 49 years, and right now I can't accept the fact that you won't be just a phone call away.
 
Thank you for always being there when I needed you, starting back in elementary school when you helped me with my math homework.  I know I got my way with numbers from you. You taught me how to zip through the hardest “word find” puzzles and to play a mean game of Spades.

Thank you for teaching me how to drive. It didn't seem like that big of a deal at the time. Now, after having taught my own 15-year-old to do it (and realizing that 30 miles an hours feels a lot faster when a child is behind the wheel), I realize what it took for you to get through it without losing your cool.

Thank you for always being there after high school every time I moved to a new apartment (which happened quite frequently for a while). You never complained, even though most of the time the move happened in the middle of a typical hot Oklahoma summer.

Thank you for instilling a strong work ethic in all of us. We watched you get up every day and go to work, no matter how you felt. You taught us that you do whatever it takes to support your family, even if that means taking on extra jobs at the end of an already long work day.

But most of all, thank you for being the model of the perfect Grandfather to Jordyne. Thank you for the countless days of dress-up, tea parties and shopping trips to the BX (to get her the food that in her words “My Mommy won't buy me”). Thank you for always being there with a hug when she needed it. Thank you for acting like every drawing she made rivaled Picasso and Van Gogh. Thank you for making her think that a visit from her could make any day better. Thank you for making her your Little Buddy, and for treating her like she was the most important person in the world to you. Her love for you showed on her face every time she saw you. You were exactly what she needed in her life. You taught her what unconditional love is. She will miss her "Poppa/Poppy/Pops" forever.

There are so many things I will miss, but mostly I will miss the quiet times, with you in your big chair and me on the couch. I won't ever be able to watch Bonanza again without thinking of you and hearing you say “The Ponderosa never loses.”

Although I know the next few days, weeks and months won't be easy, I will try to find comfort in the memories. I also take comfort remembering that the last thing you said to me was “Bye, Doober. I love you.”

Deidra Jordyne, I'm sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is to lose a parent and a grandparent. Time will heal your wound. He is in a better place now and has no problems. I wish you the best in this time of need.
