Mary Debra “Debbie” Scarberry flew from this world into the eternal sunshine on July 29, where she’s once again dancing in the wildflowers with the love of her life, Donnie and beloved dog Charlie. While those left to mourn her passing are heartbroken, we’re grateful she’s done with her battle against the nasty beast known as metastatic breast cancer and no longer knows pain and heartache. Her beautiful contagious smile will live in our hearts forever.
Debbie was born in Oklahoma City on August 7, 1956, youngest child and only daughter to parents Charles Albert Cahill and Mary Clarisa Goddard. Her childhood was spent in the OKC area, where she graduated from Del City High School. Debbie retired from the University of Oklahoma’s food service department, where she spent her 20+ year career feeding countless students, faculty, and staff, all while smiling and laughing that raspy, joyous laugh.
In 1975 Debbie met the love of her life Donnie. In 1977 they welcomed their baby girl and only child Chasity into this world. Debbie was so proud to be known as the “cool mom” and to have the house where everyone was welcome, no matter the day or time. She loved being Girl Scout 18 Troop Leader and unofficial Band Mom! She took her loving nature to an entirely new level when her grandson Jaden was born.
In her spare time, Debbie enjoyed spending time outside, gardening, watching the hummingbirds, camping and traveling. She was an avid bowler and on league at Sunnylane Bowl with friends and family. She spent several years playing in a pool league at the 8-Ball in Midwest City, She made tons of friends and enjoyed lots of fun evenings in their company. She was lovingly known by her league friends as Debbiedoo!
In later years, she loved watching old westerns, silly sci-fi movies, The Price is Right, and Wheel of Fortune. She loved everything Coca-Cola and Mickey Mouse and kept her brain busy with word searches. When she was bored she would dance around the house or make silly faces at family to make them laugh and smile.
As Debbie soaks up the eternal sunshine, she’s waiting on her daughter Chasity Scarberry, Chasity’s husband Jeremy, and her grandson Jaden. Debbie’s guardian and companion cat Vader, also will eventually join her. She was preceded in death by Donnie, her parents Charlie and Mary and her brother Butch.
Please join Chasity, Jeremy, Jaden, and all who loved Debbie as they celebrate her life, fittingly, on her birthday, this Wednesday, August 7, at sunset at Ray Trent Park in Del City. All are welcome and are encouraged to bring their favorite memories and a snack to share. For more information text Chasity at 405-977-6533.
