Last year in school, we were asked to interview and write about an interesting person.   I chose to write about Grandma.  This is what I wrote: 

Naoma Bishop was born in Oklahoma City in 1917 and attended Central High School during the depression.  She was able to help the family out by going to work at Kress’s Five and Dime Grocery Store.  After graduating from high school, Naoma’s excellent typing ability landed her a job at Braniff Airlines.  She said that she knew how very lucky she was to have found any job during those trying times; but at the same time she said, she was young, loved to sing, and wanted to have some fun.  So, when the Warren Theater announced they were having a talent contest, she entered and won the singing event.  When her manager at Braniff found out about her winning and her dreams, instead of being upset, he went and talked to the manager of KTOK and talked him into hiring her.  At the radio station, Naoma started singing with the KTOK house bands, and when she wasn’t singing she did office work or whatever else needed done at the station.   Eventually the station gave her, her own band, her own show, and a new name.  She became Sooner Sally, and her band was the Swingsters.   
After a while, Noama and her band were transferred to KBIX in Muscogee, and they were renamed the KBIXERS.  While she was at KBIX, she sang, performed skits, and did bookkeeping.  However, it was during this time, that the United States entered World War II.  There was a shortage of men, so Naoma became one of the first female radio announcers and also held the position of anchor for the 10 o’clock news.  
Naoma continued to sing and announce until mid-1942 when she met and married her husband Loren.   Loren traveled a lot in his profession and Noama preferred to travel with him.  She retired from singing, raised their four children and did volunteer work.  She continued doing this all of her life.  In fact, when she was in her early eighties, she started volunteering at Oasis helping the elderly (who were primarily in their seventies).  She also volunteered at St. Anthony’s Hospital.  When she was in her late eighties, she retired from Oasis, but she still volunteered at St. Anthony’s, mentored a young medical student, and drove elderly ladies to and from church and the doctors.  
Naoma Bishop is my Grandma, and I wanted to write this article about her, because she never ceases to amaze me.  She is now in her nineties; she has finally stopped volunteering, but still is spry and active.  She walks the dog, takes care of the house and still drives herself and her husband all over the city.  She still fixes me my favorite foods on my birthday, and just yesterday, I called to get a favorite recipe from her.  Plus, although I may not be able to follow in her footsteps as a singer, I am going to try for the broadcasting industry.  She is the one that inspired me to try for a career in broadcast journalism
