My mom passed into the arms of her heavenly Father on Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at the age of 90 years old, after struggling with Alzheimer’s for several years. Virginia Dare Edwards was born in Stapp, Oklahoma on March 30, 1923 to James G. and Jessie D. (Thomas) Edwards. She graduated Salutatorian from Crooked Oak High School in 1940, where she excelled in basketball, softball and drama. After graduation, Virginia attended and graduated from comptometer school. She married Arvill E. “Pete” Elkins on January 17, 1942, and they were married for 67 years until he preceded her in death in 2009. Virginia was employed 22 years for Ford Motor Co. until their relocation. She was also employed by Philco-Ford Corp., Rockwell International and Boeing. After more than 58 years of full-time employment she retired. Virginia, never one to sit idle, would travel extensively, throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. She was an active member of First Southern Baptist Church of Del City for over 35 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, one half-sister, two nephews, one great nephew and one niece. She is survived by her daughter Jennifer Trammell, husband Mike and grandson Cale of Oklahoma City, OK; sister-in-law Gladys Elkins; numerous nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends. Virginia was my mom, #1 fan, best friend and Naunie to Cale. The family wishes to express deep, heart-felt appreciation to all caregivers of Sterling House, Midwest City and Crossroads Hospice.
