Mom was a late-in-life baby born August 13, 1924 in Vinita, OK to Artie Virgil and Virginia Carlina (Cheves) Pendergrass. Fifteen years younger than her nearest sybling, she would be the first to tell you that she was a little bit spoiled. Being spoiled in the mid-twenties wasn't like it is today. No rooms full of toys. No closets full of unworn clothes. Mom was spoiled by the love of her family.
Artie,Mom's dad, kept the family moving from one place to another following the work until they got to St. Louis, OK. There, they stayed and Mom began school. Clad in her home-made dress, winter coat, and no shoes, Mom was among thirty or forty other students of different ages who were all as poor as she.
Mom's dad died when she was eight . Her mom Jenny, was left with thirty-five cents in her pocket and was determined that she and her family would not starve and that her family would dress as well, eat as well, and do all the things that children with fathers did. Morning rituals became the process of rising from bed long before the sun. She'd walk miles to do laundry and ironing for the more fortunate people in town, then return home after the sun set.
