Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother Wilmetta Jean (Clow) Ashford is in heaven now. She passed away on July 2025 at 90 years old. She was born on December 26, 1934 in Mooreland, Ok to Ivy and Wilma (McCormick) Clow.
She was born during the dust bowl. When she was between 6-12 months old her doctor told Ivy and Wilma to take Wilmetta to a different climate or she would die of dust pneumonia. They filled the car with their belongings and headed for Washington state where relatives were. On the way their car broke down so they gathered what they could carry and found a train. They boarded the train without tickets along with other people. The conductor told everyone but Ivy, Wilma and baby Wilmetta to get off the train. They eventually made it to Washington.
They came back to Oklahoma after some time. During Wilmetta’s childhood she moved several times eventually landing in Choctaw. Wilmetta met Marion at her aunt and uncle, John and Alice Case’s fruit stand on NE 23rd Street. They married on June 14,1952 and were married 63 years.
Wilmetta was a member of the Choctaw Church of Christ where she helped teach Bible class, went to church camp, visited the sick and was always cooking for those who needed a meal. She was also involved in sending Bible correspondence courses for many years.
The most important quality that Wilmetta had was that of caring for others. First caring for her family, next her mother for over 20 years. Then caring for her husband when he suffered from Alzheimer’s.
Wilmetta was a loving mom, fun grandma and wonderful great grandmother.
She also loved her rose garden, Dr Pepper, brownies, and tv westerns.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Marion, her sister, Iva, brother, Ronnie and son, Leon.
Wilmetta is survived by her son, Dewayne (Brenda), daughter, Carolyn (Rick) Allen and daughter-in-law, Kim; five grandchildren, Aaron, Chad (Courtney), Ryan (Casey), Kayla (Joey) Dubord, Kelly (Clint) Mongan; and eleven great grandchildren Sadie, Ella, Henry, Patrick, Avery Mongan, Matthew, Luke, Sarah, Benjamin Dubord, Rowan and Archer Ashford.
“Grandmothers and roses are much the same. Each is Gods’ masterpiece with different names”.
