Eleanor Diamond (Feld) was born on May 7, 1936, in Brooklyn, NY. She grew up in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood with parents Herman and Freda Feld, and older brother Stanley. She often spoke fondly of Ebbinger’s Bakery, Coney Island, and Ebbets Field (which her father brought home a seat from when the Dodgers left and they tore it down), and all that was great about Brooklyn in the 1950s. She graduated James Madison High School in 1954 and went on to Brooklyn College, where she earned a teaching degree in 1957. She taught Home Economics in NY City public schools through the 1960s, and was skilled in sewing, needlepoint, and knitting, creating beautifully made clothes and decor for herself and her family over many years.
In June 1957 Eleanor married Stuart Diamond, and they moved to Edison, NJ in 1968, where they raised their 3 children, Beverly, Lisa, and Laura. Eleanor and Stuart were wonderful dancers, and throughout their lives they were often the first on the dance floor and the last to leave at parties and weddings, able to seamlessly go from foxtrot to swing to salsa to disco. As a skilled cook and baker, Eleanor also hosted numerous gatherings of friends and family, for holidays and the 40+ year card group gatherings, and raucous late nights with the Edison group. After leaving teaching when they moved to New Jersey, Eleanor went back to work a few years later, starting a needlepoint business with a friend, then became a bookkeeper and executive assistant through the 1980s and 90s. From Midstate Pickle to Marvin Rosenbaum to Lafayette Sign, any company was lucky to have her keeping them organized and on track.
Eleanor was a loyal friend, as attested to by her lifelong friendships with friends from Brooklyn, and Edison, that lasted all her life and followed her down to Florida when Stuart and she retired and moved to Delray Beach in 2000. She kept in touch, kept up on everyone’s kids and grandkids, sent cards and let people know she was thinking of them. There was always a reason to get together, raise a glass, and have some chocolate wine cake.
Eleanor is survived by her husband of 68 years, Stuart, daughters Beverly (Dennis Wasnock), Lisa (Kevin Holohan), and Laura, and grandchildren Leo, Samantha, and Carly. We’d be honored if you would share your memories of Eleanor in the comments.
