On Uncle Eugene and Uncles in General

When you are a shy, introspective child, you don’t relish surprise visits from relatives—or, even worse, spontaneous announcements from your family that you happen to be driving so close to Uncle ____ that you should just pop in and say hello! Oh, the cringe-worthiness of those words.

But growing up with a large family on both your mother’s and father’s sides made it nearly impossible to escape these visits. One uncle in particular loved grabbing me and tossing me into the air. He took my shrieks to be sounds of delight. Another took my face in his hands and proceeded to pinch both cheeks. One uncle did not. That was Uncle Eugene. Maybe he had enough pinching and tossing with his own three daughters that it wasn’t necessary to inflict pain and fear on me. He asked me questions, found out what I liked, who my friends were, and how school was going.

This continued into adult life. He extended that same caring to my own children, and their children. It wasn’t just lip service—he genuinely wanted to know about their lives. He cared. Even to the end of his life, there was a little drawing that one of the kids had given him taped to the wall near his bed. Who is like that? Only a special, tender-hearted person.

So, in my life I may have yearned for a cooler temperament in my family members, but it was not what I got. I got love, acceptance of my peculiar choices in life, and learned the true definition of family.

With heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Mr. Stern. May you find comfort in God's Word and in knowing that others feel your sadness as well.  Death and the loss of a dear loved one are the hardest things that we will probably ever have to cope with in this life.  But the Bible offers hope!  Pointing to a glorious time just ahead, Isaiah 25:8 (and Revelation 21:3,4) says "God will actually swallow up death forever and Jehovah God will certainly wipe the tears from all faces.  Please also read John 5:28,29.  These wonderful verses have helped many bereaved ones, including myself. I hope you will find the same comfort.  Once again, my deepest and sincerest condolences.

My dear cousins Pam, Susan, Andy:  my sincere condolences on the loss of your dad. Eugene was a loving, caring and sage uncle to me and my family. His loss pains us a great deal. His blessed memory is with my family and I always. He willingly volunteered informal, insightful legal advice to me on a several occasions.  Sharing Jewish holidays, e. g. Seders, with Uncle Eugene, as well as family reunions at the Raleigh and Woodloch remains heartwarming memories. My family and  I will miss Uncle Eugene enormously.
