Born in the Bronx to Russian immigrants, Zelick was raised in the Hunts Point Section of that borough. A graduate of James Monroe High School , he was an exceptional athlete who faced several opponents on the basketball court who would eventually play in the NBA. He was especially proud of his local team, the Collegian All-stars, who reached the New York AAU semi-finals in 1947.
After serving his country in the United States Navy at the end of the Second World War , he met the love of his life Gilda, who lived a few blocks away. They would be married for 67 yrs.
Zelick had a long and successful career in New York’s garment industry ,working his way up from salesman to an executive position. He was well known in that industry for his hard work, kindness, honesty and decency.
A devoted family man, he spent countless hours with his two children, Michele and Steven either playing sports, traveling to museums , going to Star Trek conventions(sorry Dad!) as well as college tours. A great believer in education, he and Gilda sacrificed to allow their children to have Ivy League educations. Completion of higher education was something that had been unavailable to them.
He and Gilda spent many happy years in Boynton Beach for their retirement. Zelick was able to play tennis and golf and Gilda could rediscover a love for art and working with her hands. He eventually became known as “Ziggy” as well as” lollipop man”. The later was for his penchant for handing out Tootsie Roll lollipops to those he met.
When visiting him in retirement, his children and grandchildren Sophie and Eli ,witnessed the love and friendship that he gave and received from others. His smile was welcoming and appreciated by all. This had been a hallmark of his entire life. Although Gilda’s death greatly affected him, he continued to put others ahead of himself.
Zelick Abo died peacefully at Delray Medical Center on November 19th after a brief illness. His children were with him towards the end. May he rest in peace and his memory be a blessing.
